No difference if the priest is authorized. Exactly the same before the law.

Mga bro, i've had both forms of marriage. I was married through a civil wedding and then through a church. If you want to ask me on which is more powerful in legal terms? The answer is: The Marriage Certificate that has been registered to the National Statistics Office and usually that's the civil wedding. I know this kay nag petition man gud me sa ako wife and the marriage certificate we used was our civil wedding certificate. In Philippine Law we can only register one certificate so usually whichever comes first kay it would be awkward to hear na you went to church wedding first then civil  i don't think this has ever happened yet, i doubt it.

As a matter of fact, it has happened several times na una ang church. Some priests simply did not bother to have themselves authorized to conduct weddings, thus making it necessary to have a civil wedding later. Usually nahitabo ni sa bukid, where a priest drops by once a week or less, and the priest has the couple married even if he is not legally authorized to do so just so that the couple will no longer be "living in a state of sin". His aim is not to have the couple's marriage recognized before the law, but to save their souls. Nothing illegal about this.

It's a good thing you have only one certificate, some couples neglect to inform the priest that they already had a civil wedding, thus, it sometimes happens, although less now with the NSO computerization, that a couple has TWO wedding certificates which causes some problems. You might have noticed that some couples who have a later church wedding, do not sign the standard marriage contract but have their vows printed on a piece of paper suitable for framing or keeping in an album. Very nice. It's good advice for such couples NOT to sign the standard contract form.

The best solution? Get a church wedding before an authorized priest. Then you'll only have one wedding anniversary to forget. Kas-a ra ka kulatahon sa Mrs.

same as Merkin, my hubby and I had both... Civil first para madungag-dungagan among ipon... then church na 5months after our civil wedding. for documentation purposes, ang civil marriage certificate jud namo ang among i-submit. it's the first man gud. but for the sake of having a wedding anniversary, we celebrate the church wedding date.
