Asia’s biggest bio-diesel plant to open in RP in May

THE newly constructed bio-diesel plant of the Filipino-owned Chemrez Inc. will start commercial operations on May 8 this year, the Philippine Biodiesel Association (TPBA) and the Department of Energy confirmed.

Chemrez originally planned for a March inauguration of the new facility, which is the biggest biodiesel plant in Asia with a capacity of 60 million liters a year. With the new plant, the company will have a total production capacity of 75 million liters, which include the 15-million liter capacity of its existing plant.

Chemrez spent close to P600 million for the construction of the plant and another P350 million for the operations and acquisition of raw materials.

Earlier, Chemrez Operations Manager Dean Lao said the initial production of the plant will serve the German and Japan markets, as the domestic market still cannot support the plant.

The company is looking forward to the passage of the House bill proposing the use of 1- percent coco-biodiesel blend in the second half of the year so that it can take effect by the second quarter and give domestic a boost.

But although the bill is pending, Chemrez has tied up with Petron Corp., the country’s largest oil company, to market its bottled coco methyl ester in its 1,2000 stores nationwide.
Preblended coco-biodiesel is expected to be a sure hit among local vehicle users as it increases a vehicle’s mileage by at least 10 percent resulting in substantial savings for the motorists in the long run.

Shell to start selling ethanol-blended gasoline next month

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., the local unit of the Royal Dutch Shell Group, will likely start selling ethanol pre-blended gasoline or E10 at its stations next month, the Department of Energy (DOE) said.

A ranking energy official said this is in line with Shell’s efforts to support the government’s alternative fuels program.

"There are just some last concerns being sorted out before ethanol can finally be offered commercially at Shell gasoline stations. It would be at 10-percent blend initially," the official said.

According to the official, Shell is also trying to seek a permit for the facility that will handle ethanol products at the Pandacan depot. If the necessary documents would be approved, Shell may start providing the product by early May, Shell the first among the major oil players to introduce the pre-blended gasoline in the market.

Petron Corp., which is partly government-owned, had also initially indicated plans to introduce such product.

A small oil player, Seaoil Philippines Corp. was first to carry ethanol pre-blended products in its stations in the third quarter of 2005. Eventually, the product was also selectively offered in Flying V stations. The initial batch of ethanol supply in the country were imported from Brazil until such time that local projects go on line starting 2007.

With the continuing volatility in global crude prices, the DOE had been pushing the country’s oil firms to consider using alternative fuels.

On top of this effort, the government is also considering the reduction of the tariff on imported petroleum products from the existing three percent to one percent to lessen the impact of rising international crude prices on oil consumers.

Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla told reporters during the first Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) forum that the proposed lowering of duties on imported oil will result in an average 50-centavo per liter cut in prevailing pump prices and would somehow ease the impending increases due for implementation by the oil companies.

The DOE is also urging Congress to pass the proposed Biofuels Act which will mandate the use of a certain percentage of alternative fuels such as coco-biodiesel and ethanol.

The bill will also grant incentives for investments in putting up facilities for such ventures.

The Philippines should and could very well be following in Brazil's footsteps in using alternative energy sources for fuel. Indeed, the government are continuously trying to develop and encourage this to make the Philippines less dependent on imported fossil fuels, with, for instance, the President's proposed use of the jethropa plant as one such alternative source. Then, of course, there is our sugarcane too, just like Brazil, and look how well that's turned out for them. Undoubtedly, it will take some time just as it did for Brazil, but with a bit of work and if everyone pulls together to accomplish it, we should get there in the end. There's no reason why we can't do it, especially as we have the natural resources at our disposal.

ive seen in the news days ago that our local plant tuba2x can be a source of fuel. according to the news, 3 kilos of tuba2x seeds can produce 1 liter of fuel. this discovery could be the answer to high oil prices

there would be a massive techonological conversation for even brazil to use alternative fuel as replacement for traditional fuel like gas diesel lpg.... and the economic cause just how much is their any country now using alternative fuel source as their main fuel from vehicles to factories?... its more like a prototype or the use of such fuels today are limited maybe on research and developmentand testing purposes or in very limited insignificant scale commercialy.

    Water is the answer.

Using Jnaudin simple diagram, everyone can make their own hydrogen gas. You can use it for cooking, metalworks, rocket engine, car engine fuel to anything you want it to be.

Sell your product as compressed hydrogen or liquify it by adding a cold (cryogenic) process at the end of jnaudin diagram.

Build your own Hydrogen fuelling station.
