    when started at an early age it could motivate the child to do well and in the process/long run -this is the important part- get him/her into the habit of studying later on. such that the monetary/material reward is no longer that important but the personal satisfaction of one's achievement and eventually grew up an achiever. no corruption there.

    but rewards system, like cash rewards for policemen, it's always a hit and miss. it motivates and at the same time breeds....corruption.

    some schools here in the states are experimenting with it perhaps, the academe have a pretty good reason to do so.
    yes, as what the article says "It's an effort to get low-income and minority students interested in the courses", so ideally the cash given was an initial motivator.

    with regards to kids getting paid for good grades, i don't see anything wrong with this as long as the kid understands that the cash is given as a reward and not a bride.
    a reward is something you give a kid after the desired behavior is accomplished while a bribe is something that you promise to give before the desired behavior is completed. it depends on how you say it to a kid: if you say: "i am willing to give you a php100 when you pass all your subjects", this will sound as a reward (a motivation or a reinforcement). if you say: "i have php100 here and i will only give this to you if you pass all your subjects", this may sound as a bribe.

    it also depends on the amount of money you give a kid. it best to give a reasonable amount of money because if the amount is too much, it will appear as a bride.

    monetary rewards work well if accompanied by non-cash rewards such as a pat in the back, a praise, and words of approval because if you happen to be short of cash, these simple gestures are enough to compensate for the monetary reward. the monetary reward will serve as an incentive for the kid to motivate and inspire him/her.

    scholarships through academics or sports, has the same effect on the child. i should study hard so that i can go to a good university for free someday. i will practice hard on the court or the field so that i will have a scholarship someday, be a pro athlete and have a huge house, a couple of cars and 5 wives.
    btw, does it have to be 5 wives?

    @ Bai LYTSLPR ...

    if that is the case , we have to instill in the young kids mind the true definition of PAID and REWARD .

    IMHO ...

    Reward = achievement

    Paid = services

    i think they really itended it to be a REWARD, they probably just used the term PAID to make it more catchy.

    not really bad..

    when i was elementary 'til college i 'forced' my father to buy my perfect-score papers for Php10 each...it did motivate me.

    I've heard a similar technique. It works like this..

    How much the child scored in a test that's how much he/she's gonna get and the child is not given an allowance...

    so instead of a child asking for an item a toy or something (let's say a PSP).. the child has "to work and save" for it..

    for me that's good because it also teaches the children the value of money

    ^ My nephew was asking me to pay him P100 if ever he got a perfect score. If there's a mistake, the prize would just be pegged at P5. That's not a bad deal.

    I guess this program would really motivate the students to study. In as much as the parents would be more encouraged to send their children to school because they know there's some good results as early as now. I think this is one of the reasons why the government is launching the Ahon Pamilyang Pinoy program.

    Paying money to kids as exchange for good grades is tantamount to PETTY BRIBERY...and it is not morally good for me.

    the best way to reward good grades is through acknowledgment and praise via honor awards from the school...we already have that in all schools anyway like valedictorian, salutaturian, most tidy and clean award, most punctual, etc...and as for the parents side, maybe a good dinner at AA bbq or Jollibee will do. im not bought on the idea of giving even material things for good grades as it will form a habit for the child.
