Try taking up short courses, kanang preparatory for call center. para ma improve ang english and you'll be more confident when you speak the language. Also try to read, watch and listen to English language movies, t.v. show.

Try sad other industries, dili ra man call center naa'y opening.

    Good luck!

People, anyone can join the call/contact center industry. Minimum requirements include age (19 years and above), single or married, a college grad or undergrad, can be a professional seeking better opportunities, with or without experience who have average to above average communication skills to join the increasing manpower requirement.

While the contact center industry finds that Cebu is running dry of English proficient manpower, other players in the industry refutes this considering the numbers that we can produce and the fact that we speak better English than those in Manila. Cebu alone produces an average of 20,000 graduates per year and we do still have a significant number of english proficient manpower.

The contact center industry will only tell you one thing -- that despite being the education center of the Philippines' South, we are running dry of manpower resource --- and this is due to the lack of english proficient labor pool. This conclusion is based only according to the take-up rates of contact centers with an average of 3% - 5%, that of course boils down to their hiring policies and procedures. Hiring is strigent in contact centers because these guidelines are implemented globally and universal in scope regardless of demographics or area of operation. Yes, we have tried to talk it out with them exploring the possibility of lowering their standards so they can get the numbers they want. But they'll tell you that they cannot compromise the quality or output of their services as these clients have also set their standards. So, having known this, we've explored other areas in consideration of their take-up rates. And oh, you'll be surprised as we've been. It goes beyond the numbers and mere English proficiency. Here are some inputs that will help you understand why it's not easy to get in and why they say Cebu is running dry:

    1. AWARENESS -- the BPO/ITES/OUTSOURCING industry of which contact centers are part of, is a relatively premature industry in Cebu. Say, 80% of the populace are unware of the industry in general and the opportunities available for them. Most people are not keen in joining the call center phenomenon because they find the job less gratifying -- people look down on contact center employees with the idea that they are just GLORIFIED TELEPHONE OPERATORS which is totally false by the way! There are great opportunities in a call center --- from agent with an entry level salary of Php 12,000 - Php 20,000 one can became a TL (Team Leader) and so on and so forth.

    2. TRADITIONAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES VS NON-TRADITIONAL JOBS --- If you're a nurse, you'll think of nothing else after graduating -- U.S., hospital, clinic; if you're into accounting and finance, it's the Bank; if you're an engineer, you'll end up in MEPZ; if you're into Computer Science/IT, you'll just be a technician. Don't you just agree?! The BPO/ITES/OUTSOURCING industry offers alot of opportunities not only in the contact center industry; there's Computer Graphics and Animation, Medical Transcription, Software Development, Engineering Design Services, Backroom operations in Accounting/Finance. There's even Legal Transcription. The world has become a virtual place because of globalization. I believe it is a matter of embracing it. And you can start by reading this and understanding the industry.

    3. WORKSCHED AND IRATE CUSTOMERS -- most people I know are turned off by the concept itself -- "contact/call center" -- as this is where you get bitched or bullshitted around by irate US/European customers at 11 p.m. while your friends are out there partying... Who doesn't need a job?! And most are out there looking for one. The thing is, BEGGARS CAN'T BE CHOOSERS! Everyone would love to have a decent and rewarding job in top corporation, but you even ain't there yet! Since you're still out hunting and haven't found one that would fit your idealism, why not try the call center industry?! It may be stressful, yet rewarding with the pay and the work-play environment being offered. And so what if customers throw hurting words?! It's just typical of us Filipinos to be soooh sensitive about things. It's the same thing if we're in the US or Europe, we'll still end up in the same situation!

    4. READINESS/PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT -- i'm no saint. i haven't been good in school either... but there's one thing that kept me going -- INTEREST and that drove me to where I am right now. You guys may be looking for a job right now but don't just go looking. Prepare yourself. Study. Research. Review. Be creative especially with the way you present yourself starting with your RESUMEs. I've gone through ridiculously made resumes -- one said *** : SINGLE!; the other had a picture taken of himself with the CR as his background! And you say you're looking for a job?!!!!! Are you kidding? Resumes of this kind will definitely end up in the BIN. And interviews... Guys, be confident. Don't be afraid. I have those who act so submissive as if in front of a Japanese soldier. Carry yourselves well to increase your chances of being hired.

    5. SPEAK ENGLISH -- lets embrace globalization for Filipinos to be globally competitive. We're getting there. And please help advocate this cause by sharing this information to friends.
