nah, this will be more complicated and most likely proxy war nasad ni once Russia curbs to the international community and withdraw--just like in Georgia. Ang end result, civil war, with several groups backed by various powers.

1914 was a result of: underestimation, a gentleman's era(where they actually had a strong obligation to owe up to treaties that were very demanding, else they lose their sphere of influence), and fanatic militant nationalism (we like to pretend that this is bad, nowadays).

Then again, if Russia thinks the U.S., U.N. et al will never do anything but bark, and then all of a sudden, the west thinks Putin is getting too bold and they can't risk losing anymore face (Syria, Georgia, Iran--as of recent)...then, God save us all. But I think it's more complex than that. Most likely, someone will back down, which wasn't an option then in 1914. I mean ffs, some teenager belonging to the minority shot the Archduke, how dare they. Germany thought they can take on the triple entente without a war of attrition so they committed to Austro-Hungary, and Russia conversely committed to the Serbs. I have no reason to believe that Putin, nor the Chinese, feel the same way right now if they go into a hot war with the west. They know better. There's a reason that for conventional usage, the term "superpower" became exclusive to the U.S. after 2 world wars, and a cold war.

Very interesting that Ukraine is now referencing "safety of its nuclear assets".
As far as I'm aware this is the first time they have mentioned that.
Then it brings into play the 1994 Budapest Memorandum - which was signed between Ukraine, the US, UK, and Russia. Ukraine agreed to give up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal, in return for the signatories promising to come to Ukraine's defence in case of aggression.

Ukraine pleads for Britain and US to come to its rescue as Russia accused of 'invasion' - Telegraph
