facebook uses ajax upload, it saves the uploaded image into a temporary directory before transfered to their cdn server, all you need to do is just create to directories one is for temporary and one is for final destination.

if this is related to the facebook style upload a.k.a ajax upload, i would suggest you use uploadify,m this can be done via javascript... though not all browser/system supports it.
