    agnostic and an atheist though.
Then you're WEAK. You're still agnostic because you don't profess 100% true aetheism. But in your philosophy devoid or arrogance - the belief that nothing can be confirmed or denied then by definition you are agnostic.

tried to answer tolstoi's query yesterday, but lost it when the fourms had it's ocassional jittery moments.

but anyway, my parents are devout Catholics. But unlike the hell-and brimstone type, they see things in a liberal light. i was raised to be a Catholic but ended up not only rejecting the Christian dogma but the whole theistic argument of the existence of a 'god'.

perhaps it was due to the fact that i was raised in an atmosphere that did facilitate questions with honest answers and not stifling them with fear. my parents valued an honest and responsible questioning of everything that there is; every accepted truth was dissected by me and my father when i got a chance to see him (which is not too often these days), with him taking the conservative view, and me always the liberal that i am.

my parents instructed me on how the world works, but did not push me to conform; that was the choice that i was suppose to make. but the choice was not something that came out of the blue one day. it was a gradual realization that took a little more than a year to make, pitting argument against each argument, honest question against another. and the conclusion came with the dissatisfaction of answers like 'god works in mysterious ways' or 'you cannot hope to know the mind of god'. i do not know but my pet fish also works in mysterious ways and i too cannot understand what is in its mind.

my parents know about my position (religious then political) and although they know for a fact that we stand at diametrically opposed in many matters, i get this feeling that we have more in common that people may think. i am after all their son. it is with those beliefs that religion is not suppose to divide but unite; not suppose to cause hate but understanding through genuine love for each other. we sometimes joke around about religious fundamentalists frothing at the mouth with their pronunciations of being 'mandated by God' or being 'God-chosen'.

we may not be able to agree on my view that religion and theistic/spiritual belief is an outcrop of human social unconscious to adapt to an ever-hostile and changing world, but we agree most certainly that religion's primary purpose, if anything, is to uplift the human condition.

Atheism is characterized by an absence of belief in the existence of gods.
agnostic is someone who believes that we do not know for sure whether God exists.
what then is the difference between these two? mura pareho ra man sila. why the difference then?

I think both are the same, because there are those who state that nothing can be confirmed or denied but aetheism if one is so certain to proclaim himself an aetheist - is a mere denial of the metaphysical and paranormal because hardcore aetheists only believe in the secular.
