philosophically correct!
d man na pilosopo na size is difference- there are fast 2.5 hdd and there can be slow 3.5 hdd, low consumption 3.5 and high consumption 2.5 hdds. ang size man jd main diff, not specifically para pang desktop or pang laptop na hdds.
aside from the form factor which is pretty obvious, the main difference is power...w/ fewer & smaller platters inside, the 2.5in drives consumes up to 50% less power than its 3.5in. counterpart...
another difference is builtin shock protection...most 2.5in hdds have it...
another is speed...mas hinay gyud ning 2.5in kaisa 3.5in...smaller cache/slower rotational speed...
another is price...inversely proportional to size & capacity...

size, power consumption and (sometimes performance).
OT: nowadays, size and performance does not always go together, sometimes bigger is better, sometimes bali sad... but between 2.5 and 3.5 hdd, if ka afford ko sa 2.5 HDD, adto ko sa smaller, gamay ra man performance difference nila. power consumption wise, mas gamay sa 2.5" mas gaan pa labi naa naay Lan Partey!
