Before, I usually "demo'd" a game by either downloading the pirated version first, or getting it from your local shady dealer in the physical world. If I liked it, or if I find that the multiplayer component is worth checking out, I buy the original (either through Steam/Origin, or retail). I did this for all HL2 games, MW3, Black Ops, all Splinter Cell games.. the list goes on.
Although I've been doing this a lot less now. I mostly just check out Steam or Origin and see which games are getting huge discounts; with the holidays in the horizon, I expect to see a lot more great deals . I just find it more convenient than pirating. No worries about viruses/malware possibly infecting your PC, and download speeds are consistent all throughout (no more worries about seeders, etc.)
I understand that most of us pirate games primarily because we can't afford it, or because we are just testing it. That's OK, but if you keep doing it even if you clearly have sufficient income to buy the original, then there's clearly something wrong with you. Support the game developers!
