The Medieval age is often associated with the 'Dark Ages' because after the collapse of the Roman empire there was a massive decline of intellectualism, innovations. European kingdoms were always in strife disposition with each other and wars plagued the land. But because of the Crusades there was once again changes brought about by the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa. Aside from exchanging cold steel, Christians and Muslims were also exchanging and absorbing their cultural heritage, science, and art once again begin to flourish. It was for the most part business as usual, but now it has opened in farther branches with wider opportunities.

Here's some everyday things Westerners have acquired from the Arabs and are constantly part of our daily life today.

Words we commonly use today originating from the Mohammedans.

    qand - Candy
    qitar/a - Guitar
    makhazin - Magazine (storage unit)
    soffa - Sofa
    al-kohl - Alcohol
    sukkar - Sugar
    garbahl - Garbage
    hashassin - Assassin
Yad al-Jauza (Latinized: Bedalgeuze) - Betelgeuse - 'arms of a giant, central one' used for a supergiant Star in astronomy. More here: English Words from Arabic

Arabic numbers (Numeric system we use today) which they obtained from India.

The Arabic number system was brought to Europe by an Italian mathematician, Fibonacci, were it developed and replaced the Roman numerals.

European artists and have now vast details of Middle eastern dresses, and clothing paving a way for new fashion. Veils, silks and turbans are closely associated with Muslims but they were originally absorbed by the Muslims from older cultures. Note: These paintings were made much later after the Crusades.

Medicine was one of the greatest Muslim innovation. While the Europeans were associating health with astrology, the Mohammedans were studying works from older civilizations (ie. from Greeks and Indians)

This illustration shows doctors instructing an apothecary (pharmacist) to make medicines.

They were also the first to document the smallpox and how some disease are contagious thus the result was building the first hospitals to separate sick from the healthy.

From writings of Arab physician. Source: (The Pageant of the Past, ch. 38 Church and Learning. page 404)

The existence of contagion is established by experience, study, and the evidence of the senses, by trustworthy reports on transmission by garments, vessels, earrings; by the spread of it by persons from one house, by infection of a healthy sea-port by an arrival from an infected land...by the immunity of isolated individuals...

The result of my long experience is that if a person comes into contact with a patient, he is immediately attacked by the disease with the same symptoms.

A chief physician of the Baghdad hospital, formulated the first known description of smallpox:

"Smallpox appears when blood 'boils' and is infected, resulting in vapours being expelled. Thus juvenile blood (which looks like wet extracts appearing on the skin) is being transformed into richer blood, having the color of mature wine. At this stage, smallpox shows up essentially as 'bubbles found in wine' - (as blisters) - ... this disease can also occur at other times - (meaning: not only during childhood) -. The best thing to do during this first stage is to keep away from it, otherwise this disease might turn into an epidemic." source: al-Judari wa al-Hasbah (excerpt from Encyclopedia Britannica)

The historic episode called the Crusades was just an extension of an earlier battles against Islamic aggression and expansion through jihad in Europe.

Constantinople, once the center of Imperial Christianity has been invaded. Christian Spain, and even Rome was invaded by the Saracens in 846 AD where they even succeeded in sacking the Vatican.

Sack of Rome (846) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They set off in conquering the whole of Europe but was stopped short by Charles Martel (Charles the Hammer) at the Battle of Tours.

Battle of Tours - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then the Europeans, threatened by another possible Islamic invasion, organized the Crusades (headed by the pope) to stop the advancement of Islamic jihadi forces to Europe, through the land of Israel. Reclaiming Israel from the Muslim forces was just one of the motivations for the Crusades.

Muslims have threatened to capture Vienna but was massacred by the Christian forces.

Battle of Vienna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This threat only came to a halt when the Christian forces claimed victory at the Battle of Lepanto, headed by the Catholic maritime states, where about 30,000 Islamic forces were slaughtered in just a day of Battle. This also freed 12,000 Christians enslaved by the Muslims. A total of 7,500 Christian soldiers were killed in this battle This incapacitated the Ottoman sultan to carry out further invasion and threat to Christian Europe.

Battle of Lepanto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There was no way to classify this as an act of aggression by the Christians. Take note that they have tried to secure the vanguard post of Israel to avoid any further threat to Europe. Also, islamic forces have tried many times to subdue christian cities but they have successfully defended themselves. there was not a time in history that we can recall of christian forces placing a siege on muslim cities.

Abuses during the crusades were also rampant due to the lack of organization and over-zealous Christian soldiers. While apologists have carried out an immense black propaganda against the Crusades and the Catholics in general, let us dig deeper with history and look at the main reason why the Crusades happened.

My purpose really is to gather all these info and contributions from like minded Filipinos and put them somewhere else, a blog maybe...

Anyway thanks for that link though if you want a site with more details I recommend these sites:
