All I can say is that, everyone has a chance to work as a programmer, even if they don't have a degree for it. But the chances that you'll get hired EASILY, may actually depend on your skill or how experienced you are, plus your attitude/character. And there are also chances that it will depend on the company you are applying to.

i think to improve your chances of being hired, it will help if you can showcase you skill. it is given that as a programmer, you should be able to program. but what is your differentiation with the other people who graduated with a 4-5 year course in a good school? it is more than just saying i know how to code in PHP, Java, Ruby, C#, etc. most likely other people can also do that.
this is true. your character is a major factor. even if you are a good programmer now, if you do not have the right attitude, eventually you will be left behind. working in a company is not just working alone. you have to be able to work together with other members, deliver what is expected of you to deliver, and have a direction to continuously challenge yourself to become better.
actually nursing grad ko so working with a team wont be a problem and if they are looking for commitment how about committing 4 years of your life to a degree you dont really like...hehe but i have no regrets
If naa ka nindut portfolio that would be a great plus..
im a web programmer without a degree....
