Acai for Energy Boost Due to Vitamins

Who would have thought that such a small, purple fruit like the acai berry contains a variety of vitamins that can give a person a much needed energy boost? This energy boosting factor can be attributed to the fact that acai berry contains vitamin B3, also known as niacin. Aside from that, there are a lot of other vitamins found in a single acai berry fruit. Here is a rundown of the different vitamins contained in acai berry, as well as their health benefits.

    Vitamin A

Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind whenever vitamin A is mentioned is the fact that it is for the eyesight. Also known as retinol, vitamin A is important for the improvement and maintenance of one’s vision. Aside from that, vitamin A also functions as an immune system regulator, helping create white blood cells that fight against bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. Vitamin A also has a role in bone growth and protection of respiratory, urinary, and intestinal linings.

Rich sources of vitamin A include liver, beef, carrot, chicken, spinach, and cantaloupe. While there are instances of vitamin A deficiency, it is also possible to suffer from having too much intake of vitamin A, so one has to regulate his or her intake of vitamin A. The recommended daily vitamin A intake is 2,310 IU for women and 3,000 IU for men.

    Vitamin B1

Found in most foods included in an ordinary diet, vitamin B1 is an important vitamin for the cardiovascular and the nervous system. Moreover, it also helps keep the integrity of the mucous membranes. Other functions include electrolyte movement in the muscles, enzyme processeses, carbohydrate metabolism, and hydrochloric acid production. vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine.

As a water soluble vitamin, it is very rare for a person to develop an excess in vitamin B1. In addition, it can be found in most staple foods, such as pork, liver, cereals, rye, wheat, and beans, so vitamin B1 deficiency is also highly unlikely.

    Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2 or riboflavin is another water soluble vitamin that is essential for the metabolic processes of the body, functioning of the cells, and production of energy to be used by the body’s cells. Just like vitamin B1, vitamin B2 is easily found in the diet. Examples of foods high in riboflavin content include dairy products, green vegetables, eggs, liver, and meats.

Vitamin B2 can also be used as treatment for a number of disorders, such as migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, cataract, eczema, acne, and dermatitis. Vitamin B2 also enhances the immune system, so that the body can better fight diseases.

    Vitamin B3

Of all the vitamins found in the acai berry fruit, vitamin B3 or niacin is the one mainly responsible for the fruits energy boosting effect. It assists the body in transferring electrons during oxidation, thus helping in producing cellular energy. As the result, the person feels more energetic and less tired.

Also, because of the increased energy levels, metabolism also speeds up, thus contributing to weight loss. This is especially helpful for people who want to lose weight and tone their body.

Niacin is also responsible for ensuring the health of mucous membranes, the functioning of the nervous system, and the manufacture of hormones. Moreover, vitamin B3 can actually reduce cholesterol and improve blood circulation.

Sources of niacin include vegetables, meat, liver, fish, and yeast.

    Vitamin C

Better known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a famous antioxidant that serves different vital functions in the body, such as repair of damaged tissues, formation of cells, maintenance of healthy gums, and functioning of the adrenal gland. Moreover, it helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates in the body.

Vitamin C also has a function in the body’s skeletal system, since it helps synthesize collagen for connective tissues for bones. Without vitamin C, calcium and phosphate will not be deposited in the bones, making the bones brittle and prone to a number of diseases. Other functions of vitamin C include blood clotting, wound healing, red blood cells maturation, production of hormones, strengthening immunity, lowering blood pressure, and prevention of diseases like atherosclerosis and cancer.

Fresh citrus fruits are the best sources of vitamin C. Because vitamin C is not manufactured in the body, it is important for people to include vitamin C sources in their diets so that they do not suffer from vitamin C deficiency.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body against free radicals. These free radicals can potentially damage body cells, tissues, and organs. Moreover, they are associated with aging, which is why vitamin E is said to be an anti-aging vitamin.

Vitamin E also plays a role in the formation of red blood cells, as well as the utilization of vitamin K. There are also studies being done regarding vitamin E’s ability to protect the heart.

Sources of this vitamin include wheat, nuts, corn, green leafy vegetables, and vegetable oils. Products manufactured from these foods are also rich sources of vitamin E.

    Acai Berry Benefits

With all these vitamins found in an acai berry fruit, it is no wonder how beneficial this fruit is to the body. Acai berry can assist in weight loss, because of the antioxidants (vitamins C and E), amino acids, and essential fatty acids that it contains. Moreover, acai berry has a stamina boosting property that serves as the body’s fuel during metabolism. This will also motivate a person to engage in a workout, resulting in toned muscles and a fit body.

    Acai and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyper..what?!? Don’t let the term intimidate you. It is a common occurrence and has been a constant cause of dilemma for the aging male population. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, otherwise known as BPH or nodular hyperplasia refers to a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges with age. It is non-malignant in nature, but can cause difficulties in urination by blocking the urine outflow. Surgical intervention may be required to achieve relief from an enlarged prostate.

    What is Prostate Gland?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in males, weighing approximately 20 gms, located beneath the urinary bladder, in front of the rectum, and surrounding the urethra (the tube where urine passes through). It is mostly made up of glandular tissues that secrete the alkaline milky fluid which forms part of the seminal fluid. It enables the sperm to survive the acidic environment of the vaginal canal. The rest of the gland is comprised of smooth muscles which aid in the ejaculation process.

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?

It is often associated with aging, in men past 50 years old. Benign means that it is a non-cancerous form of growth. Hyperplasia, on the other hand, is a medical term that denotes the proliferation of cells in a tissue or organ, which may result to an overall increase in size of the affected organ.

In benign prostatic hyperplasia, the linings of the glandular structures increase in number. This gives rise to the formation of round mass (nodule) in the area of the prostate very near the urethra. When it becomes large enough, the nodule can compress the passageway of the urine, making it a challenge to void.

    What Causes BPH?

The exact reason why BPH occurs is still not well-understood, but the male hormone testosterone is believed to play a major factor.

As a man ages, the level of active testosterone in the blood drops, leaving a higher proportion of estrogen . The higher amount estrogen within the prostate could be responsible for the activity of substances that promote cell growth.

A derivative of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is likewise thought to be a culprit. It is produced from testosterone in the prostate through the enzyme 5α- reductase. Although the levels of testosterone decrease with advancing age, DHT levels are maintained. DHT is more potent than testosterone in promoting prostate growth.

    Why Should I be Concerned?

While prostate enlargement is common as age advances and may leave no disturbing symptoms for some, it is a cause of worry when it becomes large enough to impinge on the surrounding urethra.

Not only will it block the passage of urine, but can cause complications to adjacent organs as well. When the urine couldn’t pass through, it is retained in the urinary bladder where the constant large urine volume contributes to the formation of cystitis, or irritation of the bladder wall. Incontinence, stone formation and kidney damage due to the outflow obstruction may ensue.

How Do I Know If I Have BPH?

Symptoms that will clue you in whether or not you have BPH, are the following:

More frequent urination, with the need to get up several times at night to pee
There is urge to urinate, but only small drops of urine come out
Having to strain to start the urination
Feeling of being unable to fully empty the bladder
    Dribbling after voiding
    Weak urine stream

What Can I Do To Prevent the Progression of BPH?

Before your prostate reaches a gigantic size, and you being left with no other choice but to go under the knife, take control of your health starting with natural remedies.

Keeping a low cholesterol diet appears to help. It is believed that saturated, animal fats affect hormone levels which in turn, aggravate prostate problems.

Go easy on alcoholic drinks, especially beer. One of the hormones associated with prostatic enlargement is increased with the consumption of these beverages.

Avoid heavy starches, sweets and salty food, as these irritate the prostate.

How Can Acai Help Relieve Prostate Enlargement?

When choosing food supplements, go for the ones which are healthy sources of phytosterols. These are compounds extracted from plants that provide beneficial effects to the body. Acai berry, the indigenous fruit from Brazil, has been found to be rich in phytosterols. Sterols are presently being used to relieve symptoms related to prostate enlargement. Acai is in the same family of Saw Palmetto, a common herbal treatment for prostate disorders.

A study reveals that an ethanol extract of acai fruit peel inhibited testosterone 5-alpha reductase. In patients with an enlarged prostate, the difficulty of urination was prevented by the administration of 2 tablets per day for 1 month.

The dark purple skin of acai contains anthocyanins, which offer strong anti-oxidant properties ten times more potent than those from grapes. Antioxidants get rid of the body’s toxins and show promising results in shrinking the enlarged prostate.

In prostate enlargement, it is important to avoid getting constipated, as this may cause additional pressure to the prostate. The high dietary fiber content of acai will aid in the regular movement of bowels, preventing constipation. By preventing constipation, further complications to the prostate are lessened.

Acai for the Management of Menstrual Pain

Every girl dreads that time of the month when she has to endure the pains accompanying menstruation. Although the severity of menstrual pain varies from girl to girl, it is surely an uncomfortable feeling that no one wants to experience.

    Menstrual cramps and age

According to statistics, menstrual pain is the number one reason why women younger than 30 years old absent themselves from work or from school. Worse, 10% of these women who experience menstrual cramps are temporarily disabled by the pain and other symptoms.

Women who started having periods at a very young age, usually less than 11 years old, are more predisposed to experience menstrual pains. Also, those who have never been pregnant have sharper menstrual cramps than those who have already given birth. Other risk factors include obesity, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and a period lasting for more than 5 days.

    Causes of menstrual pain

Basically, the culprit responsible for bringing about menstrual cramps is prostaglandin. Prostaglandin is produced in the tissues lining the uterus, and this becomes the stimulus for the muscles of the uterus to contract. Contraction of the uterine muscles produces pain, and so the more prostaglandin a woman produces, the more painful it will be.

Aside from prostaglandin, menstrual pain is also associated in several reproductive conditions, like the presence of fibroids in the uterus, endometriosis, infections in the reproductive tract, ovarian cyst, narrow cervix, abnormal pregnancy, and intrauterine device for birth control.

There are two types of menstrual pain or dysmenorrhea – primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea is when the woman had menstrual pains from the very start of her period. However, if he menstrual cramps are secondary to a medical condition like endometriosis, then it is called secondary dysmenorrhea. The latter can be remedied once the underlying cause is treated.

    Symptoms of menstrual pain

Aside from the obvious symptom that is pain in the lower abdominal region, a woman may also experience low back pain and leg pain. This is because the pain from the abdomen radiates to these parts. Menstrual pain happens just before a woman begins her period, and the symptoms may continue until 2 to 3 days after.

Other less common accompanying symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headaches, diarrhea, weakness, and irritability. In worst cases, a woman may even experience fainting spells. Some women also cannot do their normal activities because of extreme pain.

    Prevention

Menstrual cramps can be prevented. Even though majority of women experience menstrual pain before their period, there are still a few who get to be comfortable during their periods.

Since overweight women are more prone to menstrual cramps, it is advisable to maintain a normal body weight. Also, you must live a healthy lifestyle. Avoid drinking too much alcohol or smoking cigarettes. Regular exercise should also become a part of your routine. And finally, you should stick to a low fat diet, which is not only good for avoiding menstrual cramps but also for avoiding a lot of other health problems.

    Treatment

If you are the type of person who experiences severe menstrual cramps, then it might be advisable for you to take painkillers, such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Ketoprofen. These drugs are available over the counter and they inhibit the release of prostaglandin so that pain will not be felt. Remember that these medications must be taken before the onset of menstruation for optimum results. Also, since these are anti-inflammatory drugs, it is necessary to take these with meals to avoid having an upset stomach.

Of course, you can also just opt to relieve menstrual cramps using non-pharmaceutical methods, such as placing a heating pad to the lower abdominal area so as to relax the contracting uterine muscles. You can also massage the aching areas.

Speaking of less aggressive treatment modalities, why don’t you try taking supplements to aid you in fighting menstrual cramps? The acai berry is said to have a lot of wonderful benefits, and one of them is kissing menstrual pain away. This is because acai berry is rich in calcium content. Calcium coats the lining of the uterus and the stomach, so that there is less pain felt when the uterus releases prostaglandin and starts to contract. Other symptoms associated with menstrual cramps are also alleviated because of acai berry.

    Acai Aid For Vision

As the old saying goes, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” The trouble starts when the windows become blurry, preventing you from appreciating all the beautiful sights to behold. Having vision problems with one’s eyesight can be incapacitating. Your daily menial tasks can become a challenge when your vision is impaired.

    Common Vision Disorders

    Macular Degeneration

It is an age-related disorder involving the breakdown of the macular area of the retina of the eye. The retina is a multilayered sensory tissue at the back of the eye. They capture light rays and convert them into electrical impulses interpreted by the brain as vision.

    Cataract

It is a condition wherein the lens of the eye is opacified, unable to properly transmit light, subsequently blurring vision.

    Glaucoma

There is pressure build-up within the eye, blocking the flow of fluid and eventually damaging the optic nerve.

    Myopia

It is also called nearsightedness, in which the person has difficulty seeing clearly when viewing far objects.

    Hyperopia

It is also known as farsightedness. The person can see things clearly when objects are far.

    Diabetic Retinopathy

It is a complication of diabetes affecting the retina due to lack of blood supply from the clogged vessels.

    Retinal detachment

This happens when the retina is separated from the back of the eye.

Acai Berry as an Aid for Vision

The antioxidants in acai berry may protect you from vision problems like those mentioned above. Its high concentration of antioxidants, more than any other fruit, is responsible for the health benefits it brings.

Antioxidants are important for the eyes in keeping the connective tissues surrounding the eye stabilized, making the collagen sturdy. It also minimizes the pressure in the eyes which is encountered in glaucoma. Acai berry has potent antioxidants due to its high anthocyanin content.

Acai contains beta carotene and vitamin C that are important in maintaining the normal function of the eyes.

The omega fatty acids in acai likewise contribute to the beneficial properties aiding vision. These essential fatty acids allow the cells to absorb nutrients which are needed by the eye to maintain its good health and proper function.

The omega fatty acids and antioxidants are important in preventing plaque formation in the arteries, which may totally occlude the smaller arteries supplying the eyes. The phytosterols in acai are known to help lower cholesterol levels. Oxidized cholesterol is a culprit for clogged arteries due plaque deposits. It is necessary to keep the cholesterol levels down.

Most of the vision problems result as a complication of diabetes. Cataract and retinopathy are most often associated with diabetes. Cataracts occur more frequently among diabetics, and at an earlier age than the general population. Retinopathy occurs in most diabetes type 1 patients, while 60% of those afflicted with diabetes type 2 develop it. Acai berry is useful for diabetics because of its low glycemic index. It means that it converts slower into glucose. It curbs your appetite by telling your brain that you are full, for a longer time. By controlling diabetes, you are also controlling the complications that impair the vision.

    Acai Antioxidant

As you may know, antioxidants are the best defense we have against aging and disease and have been proven time and time again to promote overall good health in many ways.

What scientists and doctors are slowly coming to realize now is that the best possible source of antioxidents is fresh Acai berry fruit. (Or properly prepared, flash-frozen Acai berries.)

Acai berries have a never-before seen level of Antioxidants occurring naturally, both in the fruits' pulp and in its' seed. Combined with the many other nutrients in the acai berry, it's no wonder that Dr. Perricone and many others consider Acai berries to be the "number one super food."

How powerful exactly is the Acai Antioxidant?

Acai berries grown at different plantations, at different harvests, in different soil conditions, and processed in different ways will greatly vary. However, the method for measuring the total antioxidant activity of a biological sample, called the "ORAC Value" typically rates the Acai berry at over 1200 ORAC per Gram, which is 12 TIMES higher than the next highest edible berry on the planet!

Red Grapes were previously one of the commercially available fruits in the US with the highest ORAC values. However, it has been found that acai berries have over 30 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine! That's 200% - 750% higher than any other fruit or vegtable known... Clearly it is the best source of Antioxidants on the planet.

(Source: The Perricone Promise, Nicholas Perricone, MD. Time Warner Books 2004.)

It is estimated that the average person needs approximately 6000 ORAC per day, but 95% or more of the people in the world do not consume half of that daily amount.

The first person to run an ORAC assay on the Acai berry, Dr. Alexander Schauss, has written many well-recieved papers on the subject that were published in very reputable science journals. He's even running a study now that focuses on the power of the Acai berry's antioxidant in humans.

    Acai berry side effects??

Acai berries are fruit, not drugs, so the side effects of ingesting too many Acai berries or acai berry juice is negligible.

Acai berries do have large amounts of Vitamins such as Vitamin C (in Flavonid form) and Vitamin E, so vitamin overdoses still apply. Common 'side effects' of a vitamin overdose such as Vitamin C is a messy stool or acidic taste in the mouth.

Antioxidants, which Acai berries are most famous for, cannot be taken to overdose. Dr. Andrew Schauss, the world's leading expert on acai berries, says that our bodies work better the more Antioxidants we take in, but at the level of 6,000 ORAC TE per gram of antioxidants our body can't use any more in a given day and our liver then flushes the overage out... just like when you drink too much water your veins don't fill up with water instead of blood... It's simply regulated. So there is no way to overdose on antioxidants at all.

In Dr. Schauss' recent study on a fruit juice blend containing Acai berry juice, he found in blood samples that the Antioxidant compounds from the Acai were very strong during the first two hours after ingesting them... After the send hour they fell of rapidly, so it appears that ingesting Acai juice every 3 hours would be ideal up to an intake of 6,000 TE per gram daily.

Basically, the more Acai berries you add to your diet, the healthier you should become!

Acai – A Great Aid For Digestive Disorders

The foundations of health lay in the digestive system and stomach. If these parts of your body are in disrepair, if it they are not functioning at their peak, then you too are in disrepair, then you too are not functioning at your peak. The reason for this is simple: your stomach prepares the food you eat to be absorbed into your body and the intestines are what does the absorbing. It is the system with which food becomes energy, and how vitality is maintained in the body.

The sad fact of today’s modern lifestyle is that very few people have a well functioning stomach and even fewer have a well functioning intestinal tract. Pollution and lack of exercise certainly have something to do with it, they do play a role. That said, the main culprit is a poor diet. Foods rich in sugar and starch, low in vital nutrients and fibre eventually rob you of your good health but you can do something about it.

After eating a healthy and well balanced diet, taking an acai supplement is something that should be considered both as a way to restore stomach and intestinal health and to maintain it.

Acai is a significant source of fibre, which is important to regulate the stomach and intestines. Your stomach can’t digest fibre, that is, your stomach acid isn’t able to break it down. Thus, it moves through the stomach and intestines eventually passing out of the body. Along the way, it helps to clear up any blockages that may have occurred which promotes digestive health.

That may not sound like much, but well ‘cleaned’ intestines help to avoid all sorts of problems, even high cholesterol. Fibre does this by removing bile acids on its trip through the body.

When choosing an acai supplement it’s important to understand that they are not all created equal! The first thing to look for is a supplement in solid form. Solid form supplements are sold in pill or tablet form and contain only pure acai. A lot of companies like to sell their acai in liquid form but this is more like a cocktail than a supplement. What I mean by that is that those companies mix their acai juice with other fruit juices like mango and guava. Now, I’m not debating that they may taste great but the way I look at it is if I’m paying for acai I want acai, not some other juice.

Cost is another issue with the liquid acai. Because of the added weight of the extra juices and the water, it costs an arm and a leg to ship—a cost that is passed on to you, the consumer. Compare this with a bottle of pills that would weigh somewhere in the neighbourhood of one gram. The shipping costs with solid state acai are next to nothing when compared to those for liquid acai!

Yet another benefit a solid state product is that it doesn’t go through an irradiation process. Let me explain, the companies that juice acai have to import the whole fruit to their manufacturing plants where they are processed. With solid state products, the husk of the fruit (where all the good stuff is) is imported and processed. The difference is that when a whole fruit is imported it needs to be irradiated (by law) in order to kill bacteria, virus’ and other potentially debilitating pests. Unfortunately, irradiated food by virtue of being exposed to radiation, becomes laced with harmful carcinogens that are then passed on to whoever drinks the juice. Doesn’t that sound like something you’d want to avoid?

As far as a specific recommendation for acai, I prefer this ACAI JUICE product from First HEALTH company. They offer non-irradiated juice and at a very reasonable price.

So, with that, I wish you good luck on your journey to better health.
