I would still stick to my recommendation or to regilsolon's. Going for an i3 set-up is ok but not the best choice especially for gaming.
a little advice:
i3-550 vs PII x4 955
1. its 80W vs 125W on the processor alone.
2. gaming mainly utilizes 2 cores (you hav 4 threads on i3).
3. less heat on 32nm over the 45nm

2. yeah mainly utilizes but it works best on 4, and threads aren't that as efficient as actual cores doing the tasks.
3. my friend's stock i5 idles at 50c, while my unlocked oc'ed phenom at 100% load goes with the same temp, its die size does not determine how cool it runs. There are lots of factors to consider like ambient temps, cooling etc.
