An on-going food-fad right now are these hotdog and sausage joints. At the SM theater area alone, 3 food-stalls offering similar items opened practically simultaneously. As with the "entry-level" pizza outlets/franchises flooding the market now, it most probably won't last.
Remember the shawarma as well as the rice-in-a-box craze a few years back, when practically every corner of the city had shawarma and rice-box stalls.....too much competition kills everyone except for those who really are in it for the long haul. Ayala Terraces alone has about 6-8 pizza joints. And pretty soon, those coffee cafe's will feel it to - except probably for Bo's and Starbucks.
Sorry for going out of topic, but I noticed that based on previous posts, Sharkey, the thread-starter, has a big interest in franchised food outlets - as do I. Not that I want to get a franchise of my own, but because I am a food lover. And based on my personal observations and taste-buds, what clicks in Manila doesn't necessarily mean it will also click in Cebu.
A different thread in food and dining had a post saying that Cebuanos are tihik, that's why some outlets close here. I have to disagree with that.....if a scientific study must be made, I would say that it will most probably conclude that the typical Cebuano prefers meals that are on the salty or sweet side.....and not on the sour or vinegar based items that people from other regions prefer. That may be the reason why Kapampangan and Ilocano style of cooking doesn't have a bigger base of fans here, while the sweeter, gata-based cooking of Batangas does. The hot and fiery Bicolano style does have my nod of approval.
Back to the subject - JOEY's PIZZA. Naa sila on the sweet and meaty side, an attempt perhaps to replicate American pizza. Even their interiors are done with bricks, to get that rustic American feel, in contrast to the outdoor-themes dominant in Italian-based pizza outlets. But I have to say that Joey's pizza tastes rather bland, even with the amount of meat they put on top.
Anyway, I wish them luck if they do branch out here.
My friends in Manila just gave me their feedback about Joey's - most say "It's OK." while the minority said "I like it!"
No rave review though.
None of the locals I talked to want this pizza joint to be here in Cebu.
