Thread: Gears of War 3

Ok, so the surprise got ruined thanks to the xbox live monkeys not getting their memo on time that Cliffy B appearance on Jimmy Fallon was rescheduled for Monday. Now we know that Microsoft is obviously planning (or was since the leak ) all this Gears of War 3 TV announcement . The exact same day that designer Cliff Bleszinski was supposed to appear and rock everyone’s socks with his sick new game a little oops went online on the Xbox Live dashboard celebrating the Gears of War 3 announcement and letting us know that Microsoft is indeed driving the hype train. Why would they have all this stuff prepared early on the marketplace if wasn’t part of their plan..hmmmm? Of course Microsoft is behind this and they can’t hardly wait to show it.

I wouldn't blame it on Microsoft entirely for the screw up. Blame it on some young lesbian chick kid called 'Justine Bieber'. She He was the one who bumped Cliffy B. for a later date on Jimmy Fallon's show.

Why is that kid appearing on Late Night TV anyway? Isn't that past her his curfew?

Microsoft and Epic Games have officially announced the ongoing development of Gears Of War 3.

During an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski said that the title is planned for an April 8, 2011 launch, the same date we predicted last month.

“In the new game there’s an even greater threat called the Lambent [mutated variant of the Locust, created from prolonged exposure to the radioactive liquid Emulsion] and it’s these kind of crazy tentacledd monsters that can mutate while you’re fighting them,” he said.

“[We have] all sorts of new weapons, we’ve got a double barrelled shotgun, we have female soldiers finally in the game - a lot of fans have been asking for that one for a while.”

Last week we revealed the first Gears Of War 3 gameplay details, reporting that Epic plans to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like limbs capable of extending to player cover spots. Bleszinski’s announcement featured no mention of the underwater missions we predicted.

Following the show, Microsoft issued a press release reiterating the title's April 8, 2011 European release date.

“When we released Gears Of War more than three years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad,” Bleszinski said. “This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the Gears Of War saga, and we can’t wait to deliver it.”

To accompany the game’s announcement Epic unveiled a trailer dubbed Ashes to Ashes.

Microsoft also said that fans of the game will be able to choose from new Xbox Live Avatar items on April 20, “including the new COG armor introduced in Gears Of War 3”.

Whilst we all knew that Gears of War 3 was due to arrive at some point, Cliff Bleszinski remarked during his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night that Epic Games development of the title was one of the “worst kept secret[s] in the videogame industry.”

“There are a lot of elements that go into it – graphics are kind of the thing that initially pull people in, but what ultimately matters is gameplay, right?” comments Bleszinski, whilst discussing what makes a great title. “We have this whole thing in the business that we call resonance, and if you walk away from a game and you’re mowing your lawn or whatever, you’re walking your dog and you start thinking about it then that’s a powerful thing. It’s the same thing with like a good movie – if you see a good movie and you start thinking about it or talking about it with your friends, right? You can have a good story, you can have good graphics but ultimately gameplay is the thing that matters above everything else.”

When revealing the announcement trailer, Bleszinski further stated that “It’s actually the worst kept secret in the videogame industry that we’ve been working on Gears of War 3.”

Whilst its development has been expected, we’re still sure that Gears fans are greeting the announcement with a frenzy of excitement!

When Gears of War 2 was released on the Xbox 360, playing the multiplayer portion of the game was, at best, a chore because of match-making issues that would cause the game to spend long periods of time finding online games. In a surprising bit of candor, Cliff Bleszinski acknowledges the problems with Gears of War 2 multiplayer and promises that there are a number of steps they are taking to improve the online experience for Gears of War 3.

Straight out of the box, Gears of War 2's multiplayer in regards to matchmaking was very very clunky and very very seldom worked. That's something we take very very seriously and feel very very bad about.

Epic worked hard to fix many of these problems and are still working on improving matchmaking and performance for online play. Title Update 6 for Gears of War 2 is in work now to squash bugs and enhance Gears of War 2.

So what about Gears of War 3's multiplayer? What improvements can we expect for online play? Well the first thing that Epic is working on to improve lag and matchmaking is region-filtering to ensure the lowest possible lag. The problem is allowing people from different countries to play with each other but it is something necessary to ensure that there's a big enough player population for everyone. The trick is finding the balance or "magic secret sauce" as Bleszkinski puts it.

Other improvements to expect with the multiplayer for Gears of War 3 include being able to stick together with friends in a party. Expect to see some favorite maps from the original Gears of War in Gears of War 3 as well though none specifically have been annonced.

Be sure to check out the rest of Examiner's Gears of War coverage. We've got information about 4-player co-op, embracing the shotgun, who is handling the story for the game and more. Let us know what you think about these announcements in the comments below.

The lady in the trailer is most likely not Anya but rather the new character introduced in a recent Gears of War comic book.
