Malacañang has no reason to be embarrassed over the botched visit of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Philippines but still expressed hope the Hollywood actor-turned-politician would reconsider visiting the country soon.

Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar said it was not the Palace that extended the invitation to Schwarzenegger to visit Manila supposedly to look into the government’s rehabilitation works in typhoon-hit provinces.

Olivar confirmed that Schwarzenegger is not coming over to Manila due to prior commitments, contrary to the announcement made in the Palace last week.

“We did not invite Governor Schwarzenegger. Another group has invited him to come over. I actually learned the news from somebody else. I am wondering why the issue is being thrown at the President,” Olivar said over government radio.

Last week, Butch Meily, executive director of the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation, held a news conference in the Palace and announced Schwarzenegger is expected to arrive in Manila on February 7 to check Philippine rebuilding efforts after the onslaughts of deadly storms last year.

Meily had said Schwarzenegger will visit areas devastated by the calamities during his weeklong stay in the country. Former California State Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and a group of Filipino-Americans will reportedly accompany the California governor around the country.

Olivar said he still hopes Schwarzenegger would visit the country and help in the country’s rebuilding program. “He may help in lifting our heavy problems, unlike those who refuse to help and constantly attack the President,” he added.

"It would have been nice to have him but he cannot come. Maybe we will have another opportunity to be with him,” Olivar said.
