Did the apostles make this as a rule of thumb, requiring all those who follow them to "confess" their sins to them at the time?

not really as a rule of thumb, but Jesus pass this authority [from the Father] to the apostles.

agreed, so nganong gihimo man ning "sacrament" sa Cath Church nya required tanan Katoliko nga mosunod? inig-human ug kumpisal, ang pari pa gyud mag-buot unsa ug pila imong i-ampo eg, usa ka amahan namo, 10 ka Ave Maria, ug usa ka Glory Be....sub topic, ngano mas daghan mag-ampo si maria kung ang ginoo may mo-pasaylo kaha sa usa ka makasasala?

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Are you sure you are forgiven already? when was the last time you have sinned?

where did you get that verse?

    (1 John 1:9-10)
9If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

To say that we have not sinned is one thing, and to say that we are already forgiven is another thing. And being forgiven means that we are forgiven by Jesus Christ on the cross-past, present and future. But this doesn't mean, the Catholic Church would say, that we don't need to confess our sins anymore; as the passage pointed out, it makes one a liar.

that's true ... the Sacrament of Reconciliation could absolve us from our sins but still the effects of sin should be paid lest we seek indulgences

aha..indulgence, the act of letting someone buy your salvation.

Indulgence. I don't really buy this idea..the way others view it. When we give something, we give not because we want something in return but because there is something good in being generous.
