it is right,that earcropping is done for cosmetic purposes specially now a days were it provides a more striking & elegant 'look' for some breeds lyk dobes for instance.others say these operation is done to prevent injury especially if the dog is used for hunting large game or are used for illegal dogfighting.but it usually fell to the 'up-pearance' rather than appearance.but lets face it,there are some breeds that looks a lot better if their ears are cropped to a certain fashionable 'style' (it depends on the cropping trends of which era ur 'in')
it is banned in most (if not all)european countries (together with tail docking) but are accepted or optional in the americas & asia (ie,philippines) & sometimes are included in the written standard for the breed.
as of 2004 (correct me if im wrong) it was printed in a dogworld magazine(i 4got the issue) that the ANTI CROPPING BILL/LEGISLATION submitted in the courts of the united states,with which the AKC being a pro-ear cropping & the US's main canine registering body is called upon also,is defeated thus making ear cropping (&tail docking) legal & is strongly practiced in that area & to areas wherein their standard is followed.

Ear cropping is indeed a cosmetic issue on dogs who are not meant to have it like boxers danes , pits etc .but in the case of DOberman Pinschers , earcropping is function over form .

Function because they are very active dogs and the way the ears flap covering the whole lobe makes it more easy for the infections to occur since its moist unlike if its cropped , uga pirme . It alsohelps the Dobie to be more alert hearing wise .

I had my Dobie's ears cropped at 6 months old and took about 4 weeks to completely heal and erect but a typical age of the cropping should be during done 2 to 4 months . Cuba got the showtype crop @ 7 months old .
