Right after that incident I talked to some of the cabin crew. They were badly traumatized by the sight of the Japanese engineer's body, torn apart by the explosion.
The aircraft's pilot, Capt. Ed Reyes ended up with Cebu Pacific and retired from that airline in 2002. His retirement flight was featured in a documentary on GMA-7. In a career spanning over two decades, Capt. Ed accumulated nearly 30,000 hours' flying time. Aside from the bomb explosion, he was also captain of a PAL 727 that was hijacked sometime in 1980. He managed the situation in his usual calm and cool fashion and talked the hijacker into giving up.
Capt Ed survived a hijacking and a bomb explosion, but one final test proved to be insurmountable. In late 2006, Capt. Ed Reyes was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He succumbed on Valentine's Day 2007.
Systems Engineer Dexter Comendador likewise went to Cebu Pacific and is presently a management pilot on the Airbus A320.
