'Boom Boom' says he was robbed of win
Filipino super bantamweight Rey "Boom Boom " Bautista apologized to his fans for the bloody loss dealt during the match with Mexican Heriberto "Cuate" Ruiz at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, over the weekend.
"I'm very sorry to the Filipino fans pero liumaban ako. Nakita n'yo na lumaban ako hanggang matapos ang laban," Bautista told ABS-CBN News shortly arriving from the US at dawn Tuesday.
Ringside judges saw it 80-70, 78-72 and 77-73, all in favor of Ruiz.
Bautista, however, said that the scores failed to record the low blows and head-butts thrown by Ruiz against him.
"Grabe 'yung referee talaga. Hindi man lang nag-deduct sa kalaban ko. 'Yung kalaban ko grabeng lumaban. Isa, dalawa, tatlo, low blow pa, walang minus," he said.
Instead of penalizing Ruiz, the referee even deducted a point on Bautista's score in the seventh round..
The Filipino pug said he cannot accept the fact that Ruiz was allowed to release punches while the referee held him.
"Hindi ko matanggap na ganon 'yung referee. Ako lang 'yung iho-hold tapos yung kalaban ko makakasuntok pa, tatlong beses," said Bautista.
Eye problems
Bautista admitted that he had vision problems after blood flowed from his right brow following a vicious cut in the third round. He also suffered a knockdown in Round 3 after he took a left hook to the chin.
However, the Filipino said he weathered the battering until the last round to show the world that Filipino boxers have what it takes to last until the closing minutes of a fight.
"Ipinakita ko na ang Pilipino hindi umaayaw sa laban kahit duguan," he said.
Bautista said after the loss, he is looking forward to a rematch with Ruiz.
He also dismissed talk that the world has seen the last of "Boom Boom Bautista".
"Hindi pa ito ang katapusan. Malayo pa ang mararating namin. Marami pang laban."
Bautista's loss to Ruiz was his second following his US debut against Daniel Ponce de Leon last year.
With the defeat, Bautista dropped to 26-2 with 19 wins by way of knockout.
Ruiz, meanwhile, improved to 40 wins and seven losses.
