duha na ka klase sa bad sectors: logical & physical.

logical bads are simply caused by errors in writing to the platter, such as the ones caused by bad cable, bad memory, sagging PSU's, viruses which are designed to corrupt sector headers, etc.

physical bads are real scratches on the platter surface, such as those caused by tiny dust particles sandwiched between the head & platter, head crash, etc.

Logical Bad Sectors or Physicaly Bad Sectors can be hidden by the use of Flobo Hard Disk Repair Program. Dili jud ni cya maka repair but hides the bad sector. This software claims to be able to repair it, but it merely hides the bad sector to the operating system so that data will not be stored on that sector anymore. This is still Neat!

(This is my opinion, not to despise ruelnov's) For me, Bad Sectors are purely Physical in nature, I don't take it anymore as Logical because I don't know how to detect a Logical Bad Sector. I have not come across a software that detects if it is logical or physical. Even if I will try to open the hard disk, my naked eye can't see the bad sector.

In relation to buying a 2nd hand hard disk, you may check on the free space and compare it to the free space of the new hard disk of the same capacity. By this way, you can check on the difference and can conclude that the bad sectors are already hidden.
