    Good ideas, guys...
Aside from gaining back self-esteem and national pride to work with, assertiveness, discipline, good sense of justice, hard work and unity are the things that we need in order to steer our country into the first world again.

VERN's right and I truly agree with him. Do we need to keep on resurfacing these kinds of issues again? It will only stuck us on a web of mediocrity. I think that it is prerogative to each and every Filipino to project who he wants to be simply by just being himself. Simply put, "magpakatotoo..." In this way, you will have a sense of uniqueness in terms of attitude and personality. No need for all of us to be strictly common.

Hey pedrocar, do you know that in the states some Asian-Americans look down on other Filipinos just because they don't identify themselves with Asian looking people? (e.g. Jap-Am, Viet-Am, etc...) Some of these Filipinos are oh-so proud of their so-called "castillian heritage" that they project themselves more as European mestizos than Asians.

Well, there's nothing wrong about being proud of our "Castillian Heritage" as it is being proud that we have some "Asiatic culture."

The term "Asian" is in the same token as the term "American." The term, "American" is applicable only to citizens of United States of America (USA); it do not include people coming from other countries of North or South American continents. For example, one refers to a citizen of Canada as Canadian, you don't call them "American" even though they also belong to the North American continent.

Geographically speaking, we are in Asia and that may fit us to be called "Asians" in that sense. But really, the term "Asian" is for the Oriental people - the Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Mongolian races... all of them share a common Asian philosophy... all of them have tawny skin, slant eyes, one eyelid.

Filipinos should be more appropriately be called as "Pacific Islander or Malay," if you want to be more inclusive. And, if you want to really be true to your own skin, then be proud of it!

US Citizens are not called Americans because they happen to live in America ... US citizens are Americans because they live in the United States of America. No other country in the western hemisphere has incorporated America in their name and thus Americans were taken to mean as US citizens.

Maybe you learned cultures differently ... but Asian refers to the whole of Asia ... from Arabs, to Indians, Chinese, to Filipinos, etc.

In all honesty, I don't see the need to draw any lines. I don't see the need to brag about our "Spanish heritage". For the common Filipino, that Spanish heritage is so thin that it is almost non-existent if it exists at all. Saying that Filipinos are more "sophisticated" than our Malay brothers is just plain racist. When you think about it, they could turn around and claim British/French heritage. Who decided that western mixture in the bloodline made for a more sophisticated people? Claiming that through mixing of races ... everyone will look Filipino is just plain false ... and if anything ... pure speculation. It's funny how you say that Filipinos are not really Filipinos because of our Spanish heritage (however miniscule) ... yet you say everyone will look Filipino in decades, centuries.

In your attempt to encourage the patriot in the Filipino people, you have only managed to come off as a bigot. Theres a difference between pride and bigotry.

I think you missed something... people in India, Pakistan are also called asians... So, Asians doesnt only includes people with small eyes...

Yes, Pacific Islander is the best way to describe our race...

We are best described as Islanders , true because of the fact we live in the ISLANDS separated from a continent but in nature of being similar to the more popular ISLANDERS ie the TONGANS , SAMOANS , CHAMORROS , HAWAIIANS , FIJIANS et cetera and they do look alike in skin color and humongous size of bigboned civilization and similarities of the DIALECT but it does not constitute that because we are FIlipinos who are small to medium in build and has a total different language and more totally different dialect ... it will not limit the FILIPINOS to become ISLANDERS because physical form comparable to ORIENTALS that as long as you are chinky eyed ... that will automatically classify you as one wether you are a Viet , Laos , Jap , CHinese , Korean , Thai etc ..

Well then the Japanese should also be called Islanders because they live in an Island... And so goes with Indonesia, and some parts of Malaysia... hehehehehehehehehhe... bitaw, I think what's important is that we live according to who we are and what we are just by being true to ourselves..

Yes, let's be true ourselves as "Filipino." So, when somebody asks you, say "I am Filipino," and not "Asian."
