Lots of people playing the game != Starcraft 0wning. It just means that some people refuse to go with the times either because they don't have a system that can run the latest titles or they refuse change and evolution of the genre (for a variety of reasons).

Strategy is too broad a genre to be dominated by any single game. You can't compare star/warcraft to games like Fallout Tactics, Civilization, and even Rome (which has a mixture of real time battles and turn-based empire building) and Ground Control 2 (real time but with a focus on tactics rather than resource gathering).

Starcraft was great back then, and it certainly has held its own for a long time, it is no doubt a classic. But it's not fair to compare it to today's latest RTS games because it'll get blown away. Have you seen Warhammer 40kawn of War? Starcraft looks like Dawn of War's shriveled grandpa. And no, it's just not the graphics, the addition of squads and the ability to reinforce them very easily, customize some members with special weapons, assigning them a squad leader for special bonuses, the ability of the units to take cover on the surrounding terrain, the streamlined resource management, and the ability of the units to go from ranged weapons to brutal meelee combat, all these trounce starcraft in the gameplay department.

It's fine to say that Starcraft is enough to satisfy you RTS cravings, but it's quite another thing to say that a 5 year old game still dominates its genre (or even its subgenre) that's just being clueless.

Hmmm... I would have to say... Warhammer 40000 Dawn of war and Rome Total War. These are the best strategy games i played. (for now)

They play the game because they love it, not because of the things you said. Well, you did say "some people", so I'm letting you go with that. But because they can't run new games on their outdated hardware? pfft. People even play starcraft on internet cafes with the latest computer hardware.

And those new games you were enumerating- either they're underrated or they're not really that good to be popular.

I think I'm going to buy Warhammer 40k though... hehe
