One of the most interesting matches i read was Kasparov and Nigel Short exhibition in 1987. Short played Sicilian and castled on the queen side. The middlegame was a blunder that caught Short's bishop trapped on A file but returned a storm of pawns advancing on Kasparov's side that stuck most of Kasparov's officials until he gave somewhere in the 50th move.

well, i still do 'cept i play with my pc most of the time now...and like you, i was also hooked with the game that i could sit and play without eating 18 hours a day!!!

It's not surprising for us to see people get crazy over chess because "it is a violent game." In an interview with playboy sometime in '89, Kasparov suffered like most chess players do after losing a game...he couldn't sleep and if he could, he brought with him the previous games in his dreams. The violence in chess is the mental strain the it causes which he said is "more punishing" than playing boxing.

i admit this is also one of the best and safest openings for me. many GMs too prefer the Queen's Gambit since knights (white) usually do a good job on the center. Kasparov and Anand are also deadly when they permute the next 3-4 moves (after the main opening) to Nimzo-Indian defense. Nimzo-Indian scares me like crazy too

"The Torre Defense" is a namesake after RP GM Eugene Torre (incidentally, Asia's first GM). Kasparov on many occasions used the Torre Defense for mobility of the rooks after Black empties its officials on the King side. The Torre Defense is said to be more or less an improvement of the Benoni style.
