well XP is limited to 3GB..... that is a limiting factor.....

    That won't be a problem with a 64bit OS....

More ram is better.... especially for video editing..... since all the images can be moved to the ram..... making processing faster...

    RAM is cheap....

Again those only with money to burn..... Since Imac was mentioned as overhyped.... wait till they see a mac pro....

    need I say more....
I understand your minor point for recommending the mac pro, but you can assemble a similar spec'ed PC for a fraction of the cost, ofcourse availability of the board might prove difficult.
    But i see your point.

Still the Intel platform is a far better / faster choice for the price point.

You can actually just follow the specs of the MAC if you want

My take on yoru specs: Board isnt that important, you can go lower pa if you want as long as naay built in raid.

    Proc is ok.
Mem go with 2x2G or 4x2 the more the merrier (max out your board limit if budget permits)
Hard drive for OS go with 80x80 lang in raid 0 since OS and aps raman, then change to 1 terrabyte or two 500's, believe me you will need it
If you can afford one, a good solid state drive for your OS
Video Card, well there are many Video editing cards out there, Matrox, Leadtek Video Editing edition cards but are very pricey. So I would recommend the HD3850 instead of the 2600xt. It will help you on your video playback.
Get a good power supply, last thing you need is a breakdown in the middle of rendering due to fluctuation.
OF course, go dual on your monitor ;-D

better buy 150GB 10K RPM Raptor HDD for OS and some applications.. and P35 boards are better..

and matod pa ni sir Ryan, 1 Terrabyte HDD.. since video editing will consume so much space and memory also..

oh and lastly, if your spending for a 40k unit, get a decent casing to house it If you will be taking your videos around with you a lot, I would recommend the silverstone Kl01 or Kl02 with a hot swap sata bay and hard drive cage built in Thats just a suggestion lang

And like stealthghost said, raptor on raid is like your HD on steroids
