Default How will i know if my computer is affected by a spyware???

@*orange*: My only advise regarding Spyware Issues especially you are encountering "Multiple Window Pop-ups" everytime you startup/reboot the system w/o connecting on the internet is to perform a specific MS Windows troubleshooting procedure which is MSConfig or System Configuration Utility. Here's the instruction, Click START > RUN > TYPE msconfig > Click OK, a window System Configuration Utility is displayed. On the upper right most portion of the window, locate STARTUP TAB, in that window you could see alot of files listed, basically what you need to do is to DISABLE those files EXCEPT your Anti-Virus Software, if you have McAfee, then you need to leave these files that would start w/ MC and if you have Norton, you need to leave these files that would start w/ NAV, then Click on APPLY. Next, locate SERVICES TAB, CHECKED the options HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES and if there are still files listed that are checked, you need to MANUALLY UNCHECK IT then Click on APPLY & CLOSE, then a window will be displayed, this will RESTART the system. After the system have rebooted completely, a window would be displayed, CHECKED the option DON'T SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN. Try to restart the system and observe if there would be an improvement especially the "Multiple Window Pop-ups". Now the next procedure you need to perform is to SCAN your system using both your ANTI-VIRUS/ANTI-SPYWARE software. Hope this will help your issue...

He doesn't need to re-format his HDD. Have a good spyware, anti-virus, and firewall and you should be ok. That would be his very last resort.
