well,brazilian jiu jitsu wasn't created by the brazilians but at least when the art was introduced to the gracies they've improved and innovated most moves and eliminated the impractical ones..the classical jiu jitsu(from japan) is totally different from the bjj now..

Sadly due to lack of competent teachers, I've seen some people practice it more as a dance and think that they can fight or defend themselves competently.

Capoeira actually was a martial art disguised as a dance practiced by the African slaves in South America, specifically Brazil.
