What Whoopz said is true except he left out some important stuff. What you benefit from brands is the ease of customer support. Unlike true DIY where you have to collect serial numbers, part numbers, and company phone numbers of almost every part of your computer, a branded computer requires less people to deal with. Dell PC might have parts made by intel, seagate, nvidia and what not, you only have to cal DELL if you come across any problems. Of course, customer support service quality also varies, most big companies are usually good about it, especially if you aid extra for added warranty.
