The opposition readily blames the president from the apparent rice shortage only to find out there's really no rice shortage whatsoever. There is a lot of rice supply in the country. Since the harvest season is already coming, I'd like to think there should be no more panic on the part of the public since we have a lot of supply.

It seems that the opposition is again taking advantage of the issue to blame the government. Unfortunately, the government is answering the concern efficiently. Now, they are disappointed again because they cannot point the blame to the president. It all backfires to them for they are the ones not doing their work.

Default NFA Rice and the crisis

We've been hearing a lot about NFA rice and how it's packaged up by profiteers and sold as non-NFA rice for a profit.

Where are the farmers in all this? Do they get full price for the rice, and then the government takes a loss when it's sold?

It seems like enforcement of this law is pretty brutal. Maybe the government should just cut out the middleman and sell the rice themselves?

This direct mixing of government and private enterprise seems like it's just asking for trouble.

How much do the private distributors of the rice make?

    D

how can u make it a diversionary issue when this world rice crisis is a FACT? meaning diay, gihimo lang gyud ni sa atong gobyerno like gitaw-gan ang Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia ug Malaysia to come up w/ this issue? hahaha...lagpasa oi! para ra na sa paranoid thinkers.

abi ky murag ni-mellow down man ang ZTE case, pasanginlan dayon ang Rice crisis as divertionary...nyahaha...ang pasanginli unta cla Lacson, Jamby, Cayetano, Lozada, et al. Almost all their allegations are HOT AIR lang. TRIAL BY PUBLICITY that didn't work at all ky ang mga tawo rn mat-an na ug they are sick & tired of the circus.

    this is a double post...

but anyway, to answer your question, the farmers' role is to sell their "unhusked harvest" to NFA at FARM-GATE PRICES. NFA previously buys them at 12/kilo but now (effective today) they are increasing it to 17/kilo to alleviate their woes.

and rice, because it is our staple food is subsidized by our gov't thru the NFA importation, and then retailed by LICENSED NFA retailers at the cheapest price of 18+/kilo. Other rice varieties are being sold by private entities at more than 20+/kilo. this is not to kill the private rice retail industry coz pinoys always prefer to buy better and higher priced varieties than NFA rice, unless u r really poor and can't afford it.

as for the NFA profiteering, re-packing, and hoarding, the gov't is quick to address the middleman & retail problem by by-passing the NFA retailers and instead directly sell NFA rice w/ the help of the Phil. Army in strategic locations around the country. as far as i know, all NFA retailers in Manila (at the least now) will be revoked of their licenses due to uncontrolled abuses.

to those who are saying that this is a diversionary tactic, please watch CNN or BBC or read international news. this is not only happening in our country. our government is not that stupid to divert the attention of the people and then implicate the food security of other countries.

so stop blaming our government. in fairness to sec arthur yap, hes really doing his best.
