Game 5! But when?
By Rommel C. Manlosa

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

IN another reversal of fortunes, the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras made their free throws and the University of the Visayas Green Lancers did not, sending the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. collegiate basketball finals to a fifth game after SWU took Game 4 last night, 68-64.

But even before the whistle could be blown for Game 5, there’s another controversy.

Game 5 was supposed to be set today, but Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy wants it rescheduled on Saturday. However, UV President Eddie Gullas called Sun.Star Cebu that they won’t allow for the move.

“We, the Lancers will be in the court tomorrow. We won’t allow Game 5 to be moved to Saturday. Ngano, naay gusto papahuwayon? They don’t have any early announcement of the postponement,” Gullas said.

Commissioner Tiukinhoy did not pick answer his phone when Sun.Star Cebu called to get his side of the matter though deputy commissioner Danny Duran told reporters that Game 5 will be definitely on Saturday.

The Cebu Coliseum was booked by the University of Cebu’s Commerce Department for a PDPR activity on Friday, but rehearsal and preparation of the venue will start today.

Yesterday, Benoit Mbala played to his full potentials and stayed in the entire game, dominating the shaded lane then making two crucial free throws that turned the tide around for SWU.

And while the Cobras were sinking their charity shots, UV’s Wowie Escocio struggled at the free throw line. In fact, the Cesafi 2012 Rookie MVP awardee hit only one of 10 free throw attempts. He also missed two in the final 1:21 of the game that could have towed the Lancers to safety.

It was a dramatic victory for SWU, which lost a 14-point lead in the first quarter and an 11-point edge entering the final frame.

As UV trailed 24-10 after the first quarter, SWU started to get comfortable and the nine-time champions surged back. An 8-1 blast at the start of the third and UV got its first taste of the lead 37-36.

However, the Lancers lost it again when their free throw shooting conked out.

Escocio missed five of six and Steve Cedrick Akomo missed two, while SWU banked on a 14-5 blast to lead 58-47 at the close of the third.

UV then mounted another comeback as their defense held SWU to just two field goals while scoring 17 points to take back the lead, 64-62, at the final 2:07 mark.

After Escocio missed two more free throws, Mbala sank two charities in the final 59.4 seconds and Bernie Bregondo scored a lay-up at the 29.5 seconds mark after Jerome Silva committed a turnover 11 seconds earlier.

Then Monbert Arong added two more free throws to secure the game for SWU.

Mbala scored the game high 23 points. Arong who was scoreless in Game 3, finished with 18. Escocio topped UV scorers with 17 and Emmanuel Calo added 13.

DECIDING GAME SET
Game 5 of Cesafi seniors finals slated tomorrow; UV dismayed but will show up for historic battle
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 6:39 am | Friday, October 5th, 2012

After much fuss and going back and forth, it can definitively be said: Game Five of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament best-of-five finals series will be played tomorrow, 5:30 p.m., at the Cebu Coliseum.

In a day that saw two separate press conferences be done to address the issue surrounding the date of the final and deciding game, the battle lines were finally drawn but not without any protestation from the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers.

UV rued the decision of Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy to postpone the rubbermatch, which was originally scheduled for yesterday but was moved to tomorrow because the University of Cebu is using the venue for an event.

The Green Lancers showed their disdain at the development by showing up at the venue, in their uniforms at the designated time and ready to play, as promised by school president and Congressman Eddie Gullas.

“The decision to reschedule the championship Game 5 was arbitrary, and the basis lame, to say the least. As can be seen clearly in the attached original schedule, a championship Game 5, if necessary, is to be played on Oct. 4. That the rescheduling was due, as you said, to a conflict in schedules at the venue does not speak well of the organizational aspects of the league. And it does not help that in a prior instance when a similar conflict in schedule occurred; the scheduled game was still played at a different venue. Why this time should be any different we can only leave to speculation,” UV vice president for finance and administration Gerald Anthony Gullas said in a letter addressed to the commissioner.

Earlier in the day, Tiukinhoy had his press conference at the University of San Jose-Recoletos campus—the league’s host this season—to announce the date of the much-anticipated game and to defend his decision. He was joined at the said event by the tournament’s deputy commissioner Danny Duran.

“We have always been discussing the schedule and it is the prerogative of the commissioner to decide on that. The Board of Trustees gave me that authority. If ever there is any malicious intent on our part, then we shouldn’t stay a minute longer in our positions. Nobody can accuse us of giving preference to one team,” said Tiukinhoy.

However, the commissioner’s assurances did not stop the UV administration from expressing their frustrations at the decision.

“The University of the Visayas Green Lancers will play the championship game against the Southwestern University Cobras on the new playdate that you scheduled. But while we can assure you that UV will be playing with its usual pride and dedication, which the university is known for throughout its sporting history, it will also be playing with a heavy heart,” added Gullas in the letter.

SWU officials, in particular, head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba and athletic director Ryan Aznar were also baffled with the change in schedule as they were also ready to go to way yesterday but ultimately agreed with it, saying that both teams will benefit from having enough time to rest and prepare for the winner-take-all encounter tomorrow.

UV accepts new sked

By Rommel C. Manlosa
Thursday, October 4, 2012

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers went to the Cebu Coliseum yesterday, as promised, but not in uniform.

They did it as a way to protest the failure of commissioner’s office of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) to inform them of the changes for Game 5, which was supposed to be played last night but has been moved to Saturday.

UV, however, assured Cesafi, the fans and supporters and their opponents Southwestern University Cobras that they will be at the court to try to win its 10th title.

This is to respectfully inform you that the UV Green Lancers will play the championship game against the SWU Cobras on the new playdate that you scheduled. But while we can assure you that UV will be playing with its usual pride and dedication, which the university is known for throughout its sporting history, it will also be playing with a heavy heart. Our heart is heavy because we feel the decision to reschedule the championship Game 5 was arbitrary, and the basis lame, to say the least,” read the press statement released by UV vice president for finance and administration Gerald Anthony “Didi” Gullas.

But before they released the statement, the Green Lancers coaching staff and the management team had to cast their votes – whether to play Game 5 on Saturday or not.

Of the 25 who cast their votes, only three were against playing on Saturday. Guards Phil Mercader, Emmanuel Calo and liaison officer Marichu Cabanilla voted against playing Game 5 on Saturday.

“It was a very democratic process. Me, and Didi voted for playing (on Saturday) but we went out right after we cast our votes so as not to pressure the players. The Green Lancers fight when the odds are greatest,” UV president Eduardo Gullas told reporters.

Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy also called a press conference before noon yesterday at the Sixth floor of the USJ-R Main Campus.

“I have texted Cong. Gullas this morning and explained to him the reasons. I also did not immediately release my answer because I wanted to consult whether my answer is acceptable to Fr. (Eric Peter) Silab,” Tiukinhoy said.

Tiukinhoy said that he has always acted for the good of the league and never for the interest of any school or team.

UV coach Felix “Donbel” Belano however felt very frustrated since they have prepared for a Game 5 yesterday.

“It was unfair for us. Our guys are ready, we are all ready. We have prepared for (Game 5) Thursday. But we are ready all the time, we will play to the best of our ability,” Belano said.

SWU coach Raul Alcoseba, on the other hand, favored to move the deciding game.

Uv, Swu to settle issue once and for all game 5 set tomorrow Lancers to play with pride and dedication but with a heavy heart
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel and Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated October 05, 2012 12:00 AMComments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The highly-anticipated rubbermatch of the best-of-five finals between archrivals University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras for the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) collegiate basketball crown will be contested tomorrow at 5:30 pm at the Cebu Coliseum.

This was formally announced by CESAFI commissioner Felix "Boy" O. Tiukinhoy, Jr. during a press conference yesterday at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) College of Nursing amphitheater.

The decision was reached amidst the objection of UV President Eduardo "Eddiegul" R. Gullas to postpone the match on grounds that Game 5 was originally set for October 4 (yesterday) at 5:30 pm.

Tiukinhoy, however, has denied having set the official schedule. Instead, he reasoned out that the schedule that Gullas was referring to is perhaps for the secondary finals between the Baby Lancers and the newly-crowned champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles.

In that prepared schedule, Tiukinhoy said the date for Game 5 of the SHS-Ateneo-UV finals was set for October 4 with an asterisk "if necessary" but that was never intented for Game 5 of the collegiate division.

After the Cobras extended the series into its full route with a 69-65 conquest of the Lancers last Wednesday, Tiukinhoy said they were supposed to schedule Game 5 on Friday (today), but cannot do so due to the unavailability of the coliseum.

Tiukinhoy, however, expressed his apology for not answering the phone calls of Gullas right after UV's Game 4 defeat, even as he stressed further that what he did is for the best interest of the league.

"My apologies for not answering your calls last night anymore and your text message. I wanted to sleep it out the issue as it was still emotional last night and besides, I wanted to check the schedule first as it was not with me. The schedule was prepared ahead for the championship game and the game was scheduled always every other day for high school and college," said Tiukinhoy in his text message to Gullas.

"However, the schedule for today (yesterday, October 4) was for the high school as Game 5 if necessary but was never intended for Game 5 of college since Game 4 was played last night (Wednesday). We were supposed to schedule it for Friday, October 5 (today) but the coliseum has been booked so we scheduled it for Saturday, October 6," added Tiukinhoy.

"The Commissioner's actuations has always been what is good for the CESAFI league and never for the interest of any school. When the change of schedule was announced during the game that game 5 will be played on Saturday, that announcement deemed the schedule corrected as a prerogative of the Commissioner for what is best for Game 5. If there was a question on the schedule, it could have been raised during the announcement and not after the game when SWU won already."

Tiukinhoy further stated that "I hope you will consider this fair judgment of the Commissioner and hope you will understand being a pillar in the sports world and as a true sportsman."

On their end, UV Vice President for Finance and Administration Gerald Anthony "Didi" S. Gullas, Sr. said they will abide by the decision of the CESAFI adding that they will play with pride and dedication but with a heavy heart.

"This is to respectfully inform you that the University of the Visayas Green Lancers will play the championship game against the Southwestern University Cobras on the new playdate that you scheduled," said Didi Gullas in a letter to Tiukinhoy.

"But while we can assure you that UV will be playing with its usual pride and dedication, which the university is known for throughout its sporting history, it will also be playing with a heavy heart. Our heart is heavy because we feel the decision to reschedule the championship Game 5 was arbitrary, and the basis lame, to say the least.”

As can be seen clearly in the attached original schedule, a championship Game 5, if necessary, is to be played on October 4."

"While we can grant you, as commissioner, the prerogative to reschedule games, you did so only after Game 4 ended, and not before, as you claimed. And the rescheduling was done without even the courtesy of consulting representatives of our team when in fact we were still very much around," Gullas stated further.

Gullas said they were greatly dismayed by this turn of events, but assured that the Lancers will show up in the playing court on Saturday "because the UV spirit tells us to."

"While we will abide by your decision out of consideration for the fans who have supported us and the league all these years, we cannot help but express our dismay over this turn of events, which we feel unfairly deprived us of a realistic chance of winning the title knowing that SWU reportedly had two of its main players injured in Game 4."

"That the rescheduling was due, as you said, to a conflict in schedules at the venue does not speak well of the organizational aspects of the league. And it does not help that in a prior instance when a similar conflict in schedule occurred; the scheduled game was still played at a different venue. Why this time should be any different we can only leave to speculation."

"The University of the Visayas is not known to shirk from its obligation to its fans and other followers of the league to always try to put up a good game. And that we will continue to do. But we will also serve notice that UV will not tolerate any action that is inimical to its interests. We will play the game because the UV Spirit tells us to. Thank you," Gullas concluded. (FREEMAN)

Game-5 ugma gyud

(BANAT NEWS)

UV moduwa sa game-5
Ni Gabby G. Malagar (Banat) Updated October 05, 2012 12:00 AMComments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - "The UV Green Lancers will fight when the odds are greatest."

(BANAT NEWS)
