If you want to know why President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) wanted Cebu to be the venue of the 12th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit, it is not only because Cebuanos gave Ate Glo a landslide victory in Cebu, but that Cebu itself has become a tourist icon, not only recognized in this country, but in tourism circles abroad. Conde Nast, the numero uno travel magazine in the world recently came up with the results of its Top 10 Island Destinations for the Asian/Indian Ocean Region, as follows:
1. Maldives, 91.5
2. Bali, 85.9
3. Phuket, 81.8
4. Langkawi, Malaysia, 80.1
5. Koh Samui, Thailand, 78.1
6. Seychelles, 77.8
7. Zanzibar, 71.6
8. Cebu, Philippines, 71.0
9. Borneo, 63.2
10. Mauritius, 62.7
Just think... there are hundreds of other islands out there that could have scored better than these 10 islands, but Cebu is No. 8 in their list against a field of a thousand islands. This is why Cebuanos want the 12th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit not only to be a stunning success, but an unforgettable one. It is for this reason why Cebuanos are working so feverishly to clean up, fix and beautify Cebu. Of course, there are side issues, which often make the headlines like whether the CICC would be finished on time.
This problem really stems from professional jealousy to politics... after all, if the CICC can’t be used for the summit, CICC architect Manuel Guanzon would lose more than his P1.5-million bet (which was accepted last week by former Senator John "Sonny" Osmeña)… he would lose also his face and his practice! As for John "O," let me just say that he always had a negative attitude with regards to the "can-do" spirit of the Cebuanos. I still have faith that the CICC would be finished on time for the ASEAN Summit. * * *
