They have the one-child policy, so population is a problem, and their leaders understand it well. Think about it this way: All the Chinese family income goes into the development of one child whereas the typical pinoy family has to support 4 kids. What's the future of those kids going to be like, when most families here can barely send even one of them to college? Most end up being just high school grads and work menial, low-paying dead-end jobs. In the meantime Chinese families with just one child can afford to give their kid a master's degree or a PhD so he can help design and build cars, planes and everything else they make in China or create more jobs for other Chinese. These are just average people given the best possible opportunities. There is nothing the Chinese can do that we can't, but they are given all the tools they need to succeed. We have a huge problem with malnutrition and even our massive rice imports are not enough to feed everyone. So tell me again that population doesn't matter. The Chinese know it matters, and they did something a long time ago we might consider drastic, but in their view was necessary. The results vindicate them and make us look like losers.
In Dubai they have free education and large subsidies for the natives up until college. It wouldn't be possible to do this if they had even 2x the population that they have now, despite their oil wealth. Philippines has been expanding at a pace that far exceeds our infrastructure and this can't keep going on. I think the latest report says 3 of 4 families already unable to eat three meals a day.
