1999 championship vs Knicks - this is the first time the SPURS are in the NBA Finals. (not counted)
2003 championship vs Nets - this was the 2nd time the Nets reached the Finals after bowing out to the Lakers the previous year; only Duncan, DRob, and Malik Rose returned from the 1999 championship team (not counted)
2005 championship vs Pistons - the Pistons were the defending champs (not counted)
2007 championship vs Cavs - neophyte Cavs (counted)

1 out of 4 assumptions checks out. Impressive analysis (or attempted analysis) though.

Griffin says Blair will fit with Spurs

When Blake Griffin checked into a midtown Manhattan hotel the day before the NBA draft, he sent a text message to his good friend, Pittsburgh forward DeJuan Blair.

“At hotel in NY; Where U at?” the text message read.

    Blair's response: “Not there.”

Puzzled, Griffin sent a second message, inquiring about Blair's arrival time. This time the response left Griffin totally perplexed.

“He let me know he wasn't coming to New York at all,” said Griffin, the Clippers rookie and 2008-09 College Player of the Year who was the No. 1 overall selection of the draft. “That confused me and surprised me.”

In fact, Blair wasn't in the “green room” at Madison Square Garden, awaiting an expected curtain call to pose with commissioner David Stern after being announced as a first-round pick. That was because the league had determined it wasn't likely that Blair would be taken in the first round, which turned out to be the case.

Instead, the Spurs made him the 37th overall pick.

Blair has vowed to make the 29 teams that passed on him regret the decision.

Griffin believes he will make good on his promise.

“It doesn't matter that he didn't go (in the first round),” Griffin said. “He got drafted where he was meant to be, and I know he's going to make the best of it.”

The two power forwards became good friends at summer basketball. On Wednesday night, they went head-to-head at the AT&T Center in a preseason game. Griffin had 23 points and seven rebounds. Blair turned in his second double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds in Los Angeles' 93-90 victory.

Griffin was strictly a power forward at Oklahoma, but Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy plans to try him some at small forward this season.

“He's got great effort and a skill level, as far as ball handling and passing, that are off the charts for a big guy,” Dunleavy said. “His shot is getting better and deeper all the time.”

Blair knows his future never will be on the perimeter but said he is eager to see Griffin at small forward.

“They're really going to play him out there?” he said. “I want to see that.”

    Lucas back:
Former Spurs coach John Lucas is back on the sidelines in the NBA, added to Dunleavy's staff. Lucas replaced Jerry Tarkanian as Spurs coach on Dec. 18, 1992, and coached the team through the end of the 1993-94 season.

“I'm having a blast,” said Lucas, who coached the 76ers and Cavaliers after leaving the Spurs. “I've always had fun coaching.”

    Equipment notes:
Manu Ginobili wore black shoes, explaining as he checked into the game in the first quarter that he was going with his rebel look.

Tim Duncan, wearing a brace on his left knee, had the device wrapped in white tape between the first and second quarters.

Duncan played 16 minutes and had six points and five rebounds.

    Spurs' Jefferson breaks out

Hours before tipoff of Wednesday's preseason game at the AT&T Center, Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy spent a few minutes marveling at the Spurs' summer makeover.

Adding Richard Jefferson Dunleavy asserted, had put the Spurs right back in the thick of the NBA title chase.

Jefferson's play in the first half against Dunleavy's team made the coach look like a soothsayer.

Looking fairly comfortable in the Spurs' offense after little more than three weeks of training camp, Jefferson scored 15 points in 16 first-half minutes, surpassing his point total in the first three preseason games.

Jefferson sat out the second half of what turned out to be a 93-90 Clippers victory. But his performance gave Spurs fans reassurance that the summer deal that brought him to San Antonio and cost the team three veterans was the infusion of offensive excitement the club needed.

Jefferson, a small forward, scored on drives to the basket, post-up plays, perimeter jumpers and a semi-dunk he tomahawked a few inches short of clearing the front rim. The ball caromed to the top of the backboard and fell softly into the net.

It was Jefferson's aggression going to the basket that most pleased coach Gregg Popovich.

“I thought Richard was much more aggressive tonight than he has been,” Popovich said. “He really looked a lot more comfortable in what we're doing.”

Jefferson admitted to having been a tad too deferential to longtime Spurs in his first three preseason games but needed no prodding to be more assertive Wednesday.

“He's a pro,” Popovich said. “He knows what he has to do. He's slowly drifting towards what his role will be on this team.”

Until Wednesday, Jefferson said his role had been akin to that of a 29-year-old rookie instead of a veteran going into his ninth season.

“I'm just like a rookie out here, trying to find my way, learn the plays, learn the system, learn the timing, get to know their games,” he said.

“The more you do that, and the more we play, the more aggressive I can be.”

Second-year point guard George Hill knows the discomfort Jefferson felt.

“I think Richard is just like I was when I first came, not knowing what to expect,” Hill said. “But he's done a great job so far, like tonight. He's being aggressive.”

Jefferson said his slow start in the first three preseason games was by design.

“My job the first couple of weeks was just to learn the system,” he said. “You don't necessarily want to come in here trying to prove you can score, or show them your game. It's to learn the system, figure out where you can fit in, and then be aggressive in those areas.”

Clippers rookie Blake Griffin played like a seasoned pro. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2009 draft was 10 of 14 for 23 points.

“He's a monster,” Popovich said. “He deserved to be picked where he was picked, that's for sure. He's a heck of a competitor.”

The Spurs' fourth preseason game gave Popovich another long look at players trying to force their way onto the roster. Guards Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams enhanced their standing.

As a starter alongside Jefferson, Tim Duncan, Antonio McDyess and Hill, Hairston scored nine points and had five assists in 23 minutes and 28 seconds.

Spurs rookie DeJuan Blair finished with his second double-double of the preseason — 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Williams logged 18 minutes and 13 seconds and scored 11 points, with two assists.

Duncan played LIke an Old dog, because his buddy DROB was retiring. so Its like passing the Rod from one Oldie to another. what im saying is through their old experience, they got those rings.

Duncan has been playing like that since college. Robinson and Duncan don't play alike; not even by a mile. Dave is more athletic than Duncan, who plays fundamental, defense-oriented basketball. Unless of course you only started watching basketball seriously when Boston won their championship last year, then I perfectly understand where you're coming from.
