Mao! Imagine ha, wala pagani magsugod ug construction, sige na sila umento sa expenses. Walay klaro nga mga contructor. The news this morning says the expenses will go up to 375million pesos from 250 million. So thats 125 million pesos more. Tsk tsk tsk.

Cebu's hoteliers give glimpse of Asean Summit state dinner

    Monday, July 10 2006

    Cebu News

The state dinner for heads of state during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December is strictly off-limits to the public.

But during the "Cebu Goes Culinary 2006," the city's hoteliers gave Cebuanos a glimpse of what the state dinner would be like during the gala night of the four-day meet.

The three-day culinary event which concluded Sunday gave 11 local hotels and resorts the chance to bring out their silverware, flatware, glassware and linens they think would be most fitting for a state dinner.

"In an important event such as the Asean summit, everything should be the best, from the food down to the service," said Carlos Sainz, assistant food and beverages manager of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel in Barangay Lahug, this city.

The hotel's entry in the "Asean State Dinner" table setting competition in the Cebu Goes Culinary 2006 bagged the gold award, along with Maribago Blue Water's ancestral house-themed entry.

"We want to keep the table setting simple but very elegant for the heads of state. And because it's a male-dominated body, we kept the design on the masculine side, it's very minimal," Sainz said.

Maribago Blue Waters' antique dining table and chairs in varied designs, height and sizes gave life to its ancestral home theme.

"It's an international event and we will use it to showcase the rural ancestral houses of Cebu. I think we should show our guests the best of our local history. We don't know if our hotel will host any of the delegates but we're preparing for the summit," said Douglas Berido, food and beverage manager of the Maribago Blue Waters.

While Maribago used its finest porcelain flatware, Waterfront opted for custom-made plates with an embossed presidential seal in gold.

The jusi tablecloth and napkins, folded to look like the Asean logo, complemented the matte gold Tiffany chairs with Thai silk seat cover.

A bed of fresh red roses beneath the table's glass top serves as the focal point of the table setting, in contrast to the neutral colors of the linen and flatware.

Appropriate glassware and cutlery, elegance and comfort are the key to impressing the country's guests during the summit, said Marita Arambulo, over-all chairperson of the Cebu Goes Culinary 2006 event.

The Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu organized the competition to give the hotels an opportunity to show what they can do in case the state dinner is held in their establishment.

Aside from the expensive Scrominox and WH Rogers silverware and the Dura Ceram flatware, a feast for the palate also awaits delegates to the Asean summit.

Maribago Blue Waters plans to serve milkfish roulade on cucumber relish and lime sugarcane vinaigrette for the main course, while Waterfront's chefs will be preparing cilantro-encrusted beef tenderloin with fresh shitake, enoki and stone mushroom and ginger-flavored Asian vegetables. (PNA)

P105M readied for VIP lounge to be used by Asean

P105M readied for VIP lounge to be used by Asean Summit delegates

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is set to release any time this week funds for the proposed P105-million VIP lounge at the military air base beside the Mactan-Cebu International Aiport (MCIA), Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr. said.

MCIA general manager Adelberto Yap said the lounge is intended for the heads of state and other dignitaries who will be in Cebu from December 11 to 14 this year for the Asean Ministers Summit.

Yap, chairman of the committee on arrival and departure of the National Organizing Committee-Cebu Organizing Committee for the Asean Summit, said a new VIP lounge is necessary to avoid risks the dignitaries might be exposed to if they are to use the old VIP lounge at the Mactan airport.

Once the Asean summit is over, the new VIP lounge will be converted into an arrival and departure terminal for light aircraft plying domestic routes.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave the go-signal to build the VIP lounge during a meeting at the Mactan Air Base last April.

Andaya said the P105 million forms part of the P1.2-billion total allocation for security, accommodations, transportation, road rehabilitation, street lighting, beautification and mobilization for the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cebu, co-hosts of the Asean summit. (PNA)

BAC paper on P59M susperstructure signed

Paperwork for the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) finally moved with yesterday’s signing of the bids and awards committee (BAC) resolution to award the next portion of the construction to the same contractor.

The P59-million contract for the superstructure of the CICC will be signed tomorrow.

The BAC pegged this amount for the next scope of work as Republic Act 9184 or the Government Procurement Reform Act provides that the cost of the contiguous project must not be higher than the previous contract.

    ASEAN Summit update:

    Friday, July 14, 2006
    US not expected in summit

At least 10,000 people, using a conservative estimate, will converge in Cebu for this December’s Asean summit, including 2,500 members of foreign media.

But the United States will not be among the 16 countries whose top officials will visit the island for the activity, as President Bush will be in the Apec meeting in Vietnam only three weeks before the Asean summit.

“We wanted to invite them but it will be difficult for them to come back to the same region three weeks later,” said Ambassador Marciano Paynor, chairman of the national organizing committee for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit.

Aside from the Asean’s 10 countries, China, Korea, Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand are coming over as “dialogue partners.”

The organizers are still awaiting word from Russia and France, which recently signed a treaty with Asean. If they come, Cebu will host a total of 18 heads of states.

Aside from the officials, people from the business sector of each country are also expected because an Asean Business and Investment Summit will be held.

Each country will be bringing its own secretariat, security and other staff members.

Paynor expects the delegates to outnumber those at the last Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur because of the island setting. Heads of states and other officials will surely be bringing their families because of the resort-venues, he added.

Kuala Lumpur gathered a total of 5,000 people but Paynor expects more for the summit in Cebu, including augmentation troops from both national and local offices.

Even before the Dec. 10 to 13 main summit meetings, there will be 32 other meetings by foreign and economic ministers, senior officials and directors-general, as well as the smaller working group meetings before that of the officials.

The hotel rooms for all leaders are ready, and these will be in three hotels in Cebu City and three in Mactan Island: Hilton, Shangri-la, Plantation Bay, Marco Polo, Waterfront Lahug and Marriott.
