Roethlisberger apologizes to Steelers, fans

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger apologized to the Pittsburgh Steelers, fans and his family on Thursday, hours after being released from a hospital, saying he was fortunate to be alive and pledging to wear a helmet if he ever again rides a motorcycle.

"In the past few days, I've gained a new perspective on life," the Super Bowl-winning quarterback said in a statement released by the team. "By the grace of God, I'm fortunate to be alive ... "

Roethlisberger, 24, who wrecked his bike and cracked his head on a car windshield on Monday, was discharged late Wednesday night.

The youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl was not wearing a helmet when he crashed into a car that was turning left in front of his motorcycle. Pennsylvania's mandatory helmet law was repealed in 2003.

But Roethlisberger said in the statement that if he ever rides a motorcycle again "it certainly will be with a helmet."

some state sa us legal not to wear a helmet. i think pittsburg pennsylvania is one of them. ambot onsay oban pa.

if you are live close to the pennsylvania area. you can take off your helmet when you pass the state.

legal or illegal with regards to wearing a helmet: in my own opinion, riding a bike alone is just plain irresponsible or dumb at best if you're a big name NFL star like Big Ben and add "not wearing a helmet" in that equation, for sure you'll cringe at the thought. but in the States, teams or management prohibiting players from riding this suicide contraptions is a violation of one's rights under their constitution. everybody knows about the dangers in riding these bikes, even if you follow every rule ie no overspeeding, freewheeling and be very careful when driving, there's no guarantee that the driver in your vicinity is careful, same as what happened to Ben on this accident.

Reggie Bush could join his first pro team as early as Sunday.

Team sources told FOXSports.com that Bush and the New Orleans Saints agreed in principle on a 6-year deal that is sandwiched between Vince Young's contract at No. 3 and Mario Williams' at No. 1.

"This deal should be done as early as tomorrow," the source said.

When asked if there was anything that could hold up the deal, one team source said, "There shouldn't be anything. But you never know. All that's really left is for some language to be cleaned up in the deal."

The Titans' Young received $25.74 million in guarantees, while the No. 1 pick Williams of the Houston Texans was awarded $26.5 million in bonuses.

Bush was the second player chosen in the NFL draft and has missed the first two days of training camp practices.

The wide receiver out of Southern California won the Heisman Trophy after a sensational season in which the Trojans repeated as Pac-10 champions and advanced to the national title game.

To say the Saints are excited is an understatement. The night before the draft coach Sean Payton said he was working on a new offensive playbook to include Bush in a backfield with Deuce McAllister.
