5-year return is the return from 2007 until 2012. Pag 2008, during the financial crisis, nidrop maayo ang market hence, the high NAVPS during 2007 was pulled down in 2008. In 2014, expect the 5-year return to sky rocket because from 2009 until early 2011, didto grabe nisaka ang MFs (as well as RP's economy as a whole). FAMI alone from August 2008 until December 2010 kay nisaka from 1.7 per share to 3.5 per share or more or less nidouble ang growth in less than 3 years.

The longer the investment the better the return, why? Because as you have seen, maski dako ang drop pag 2008, mutual funds were still able to get back up. Let me give you an illustration:

Let's suppose last 2007, the NAVPS was P5 per share and you invested P100,000. So out from your P100T investment, you get a total of 20,000 shares. Now come the market drop in 2008 wherein the NAVPS went down from P5 to as low as P3. Since the NAVPS are now cheaper, you invested an additional P100T and this time, you were able to buy 33,333 shares. So now, you have a total of 53,333 shares and at a lower investment price.

Now let's assume that the price went back to P5 from P3 in 2009. Now that you have 53,333 shares, you'll now have P266,665 from your total of P200,000 investment or nitubo ug P66,665 imong investment. What if the price surged up to P10? 53,333 (shares) X P10 (price per share) = P533,330 or nitubo imong kwarta ug P333,330.

Despite the volatility of the market, in the long run, mosaka gyud na ang market. In order to maximize your mutual funds investment, you should use the concept of cost averaging or buying more shares when the market is down. If you look at the charts of all markets, every time it goes down, it will always go back up and the good thing is that, kung kusog ang pagdrop, kusog sad kaayo ang saka.

That is why it is recommended to invest in mutual funds long term.

**Don't look at the price per share, look at the number of shares that you own and at what price you have bought those shares.
