1- We may not have as much oil as these countries, but we have many other mineral resources, natural gas and some of the most fertile lands in the world. But our laws scare off the mining companies, so most of the mineral wealth has not been extracted to benefit our country, and most of our farmland is either not used or under-utilized because of lack of machinery and investment. Compare an American and a Filipino farm, in terms of equipment it's not even close.

2- Dubai allows foreign property ownership. This encourages investment and economic activity. Most of Dubai's real estate investors are foreigners. Almost all of our real estate investors are oligarchs.

3- Large and long standing national debt. Neither Dubai nor Libya have had more than 20 years history of large debt. Only recently has Dubai incurred large deficits, but then again their income is much higher so they can pay these off eventually. Since Marcos time, our country has had a huge debt problem and this has dragged down our economy.

4- Population. We have too many people and our birthrate is too high. We have more people than exist jobs. In Dubai it's the opposite - they have more jobs than they have people, that's why there are more expats than natives over there.

5- War. Dubai has never been engaged in any recent conflict and so hasn't spent a single cent fighting wars. Libya had trouble in the past, but has been free of war for almost a decade now. The Philippines has always had war in Mindanao and continues to spend a lot of money fighting the MILF, NPA, etc. That's a drain on our resources and wealth.

    6. Corruption. Dubai is not democratic but in every corruption index, the Philippines is ranked as being much more corrupt than Dubai. There are some studies that show that up to half of our resources are lost to corruption.

    7. Location. Dubai and the Middle East are very close to Europe making them ideal destination for tourists from those rich countries. Our closest neighbors are not as rich, farther away, and compete directly with us for the same markets.

sakto jud ka bro, esp Population. were not poor, were just too many.

ambot lang sad kaha no, ug unsay nagpugong sa asenso sa pilipinas? do we need an honest dictator, instead? kay we're TOO free. gi-abuso na ang democracy diri.

big population is not a problem, as long as there are many investors we can use it to the country's advantage..take China as an example..mass producers, but of course low income sd..that's why many products are "made in China" kay labor is cheap there..

if dubai was able to do it, and now libya, why can't we?
we may point on many things...for me it boils down to the pinoy people..

why can't we...? coz we never think we can..as a nation..
maybe we should try to think as one..

to think as one is the first impossibility for the Philippines!

Because as a nation, the Philippines is founded on the principle of being run like hell by Filipinos than run like heaven by some foreign nation!

You can't compare Dubai to the Philippines. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Dubai is designed as a tax free port which is a gold mine to investors. We all know why Philippines is poor, We can say the mindset, the culture or whatever. Years back, we had no e-vat. Then the great 'Ralph Recto' (being sarcastic) devised of a way for us to pay for our debt. At present, our debt has risen to an all time high. Question, where has the money gone? The average Filipino is now getting less for his money. We were better off when we were under the aid of USA.

It is because of them that Filipinos speak good English. The reason why we have so many call centers in the country. Yes, we are rich in minerals and natural resources but that will soon be depleted.

CHANGE IS POSSIBLE BUT NOT LIKELY.
