THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niņos has added five more deadly weapons to help them in their quest to win the first-ever Liga Pilipinas title.

Niņos coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba tapped the services of former University of the Visayas Green Lancers and centers Rino Berami and Ariel Mepaņa for additional power in the middle while at the wing is the former UV Baby Lancer Reed Friar Juntilla.

Completing the new cast of players for the Cebu squad are former University of San Jose-Recoletos Earn Saguindel, who finished his collegiate playing years with the University of the East Warriors in the UAAP and former Lancer guard Mark Ababon.

The Niņos started the Liga pre-season tournament with only 10 players in the lineup before annexing title with only nine players left after its starting guard Woodrow Enriquez was injured during the semifinal round.

    Eight weeks

Enriquez will be out for at least eight weeks and the addition of Ababon and Saguindel will surely ease up the load of shooter Stephen Padilla and Gerry Cavan, who both acted as point guard during the pre-season tournament.

The 6-foot-7 Berami is fresh from his stint with the Toyota Otis in the PBL along with Saguindel and Juntilla who both played for Hapee Toothpaste.

Mepaņa had his time playing for the M. Lhuillier Jewelers before he was dropped from the team early this year, while Ababon last saw action with the Misamis Oriental in the MVBA.

The Cebuanos will be tested when they play for their first pocket tournament, visiting Ilocos Sur to compete against the host team Ilocos Bravehearts, Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes and Laguna Stallions from June 11 to 15.

While in Cagayan de Oro City the MisOr Meteors will host the Quezon Red Oilers, Zamboanga Amores and Taguig Batang Global.

THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos will open their Liga Pilipinas campaign on the road when they travel all the way to Ilocos Sur beginning this June 11 at the Santo Domingo People’s Center for the community-based league’s first mini tournament.

The Ninos of multi-titled coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba and sports patron Michel Lhuillier will face the challenge of host team Ilocos Sur Bravehearts of Gov. DV Savellano, Trace-Laguna Stallions of Erwin Genuino and the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes of Gov. Ayong Maliksi and Mayor Bambol Tolentino in the five-day joust that will culminate with the finals on June 15 and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

Coach Alcoseba has made major roster movements in the aftermath of the loss of top point guard Woodrow Enriquez, who will be out for at least six weeks due to a fractured bone in his left forearm sustained during the recent Liga South Preseason Tournament won by the Ninos.

Guards Reed Friar Juntilla, Mark Jonas Ababon and Earn Saguindel hope to more than fill the playmaking and scoring void left by Enriquez. The Ninos have also added 6’7” center Rino Berame and recalled 6’4” Ariel Mepana for help with rebounds and defense.

The new recruits hope to blend well with holdovers Stephen Padilla, Bruce Dacia, Danny Aying, Marlon Basco, Ronald Capati, Jayford Rodriguez, Jerry Cavan, Michael Luga and Richard Ian Saladaga in delivering to Cebu the historic first Liga championship.

“I want to give opportunities to Cebuano players,” said Coach Alcoseba. “Even if Liga rules call for a minimum of eight homegrown players, 13 of the 15 players are homegrown.” Big men Basco and Capati are the team’s only Luzon-bred players.

This will be the first time in four years that the Ninos will visit the northern part of the country. Then known as the M. Lhuillier Jewelers, the Ninos won the only United Regional Basketball League (URBL) championship in 2004 over the Ilocos Sur Snipers, 3-1.

The Ninos will get their turn to host a mini tournament from June 25 to 29. The schedule will then take them to road trips to San Fernando, Pampanga (July 2 to 6) and Pagadian City (July 16 to 20).

A team will earn points based on their performance in each of the four mini tournaments they join, with a champion being crowned every week. The top-ranked teams based on total points at the end of all the mini tournaments will advance to the playoffs.

Selected Liga games will be shown on a slightly delayed basis over the National Broadcasting Network (NBN-4).

Meanwhile, the Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno will host a simultaneous tournament at the Xavier University Gym. The Meteors will be visited by the Zamboanga Amores of Rolando Navarro and Rep. Erbie Fabian, Quezon Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Taguig Batang Global of Mayor Freddie Tinga.

Drawing a bye on this opening week are the Ozamiz Cotta, Lipa Barakos, Pagadian Explorers, Baguio Victory, Mang Inasal-Iloilo Warriors and Liga North Preseason champion Pampanga Buddies. They will start their seasons on June 18 with separate tournaments in Baguio and Ozamiz Cities.
