Vera Renczi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vera Renczi (1903–1960?) was a Romanian serial killer who poisoned thirty-five individuals including her husbands, lovers and one son with arsenic during the 1920s and 1930s.
    Early life

Born into a wealthy family whose roots were traced to minor Hungarian nobility in Bucharest, Romania, the family relocated to the town of Berkerekul when Renczi was ten. By the age of fifteen, she had become increasingly unmanageable by her parents and had frequently run away from home with numerous boyfriends, many of whom were significantly older than herself.[6] Early childhood friends described Renczi as having an almost pathological desire for constant male companionship and possessing a highly jealous and suspicious nature.[7]
Renczi's first marriage was to a wealthy Bucharest businessman many years her senior and she bore him a son named Lorenzo.[7] Left at home daily while her older husband worked, she began to suspect that her husband was being unfaithful. One evening, in a jealous rage, Renczi tinctured the man's dinner wine with arsenic[7] and began to tell family, friends and neighbors that he had abandoned her and their son. After approximately a year of "mourning", she then declared that she had heard word of her supposedly estranged husband's death in an automobile accident.[6]
    [edit] Subsequent murders

Shortly after hearing the news of her first husband's "automobile accident" Renczi again remarried; this time to a man nearer her own age. However, the relationship was a tumultuous one and Renczi was again plagued by the suspicion that her new husband was involved in extramarital affairs. After only months of marriage the man vanished and Renczi then told friends and family that the man had abandoned her.[7] After a year had passed, she then claimed to have received a letter from her husband proclaiming his intentions of leaving her forever.[6] This would be her last marriage.
Although Renczi would not remarry, she would spend the next several years carrying out a number of affairs, some clandestine with married men, and others openly. The men came from an array of backgrounds and social positions. All would vanish within months, weeks, and in some cases, even days after becoming romantically involved with her. When connected to men she was openly having an affair with, she would invariably concoct stories of them being "unfaithful" and having "abandoned her".[5]
After the wife of one of Renczi's lovers followed him to Renczi's residence one evening and the man subsequently never returned home, the police were called to investigate his disappearance.

Upon searching Renczi's wine cellar, they discovered thirty-two unburied zinc-lined coffins. Each contained a male corpse in varying stages of decomposition.[5]

Renczi was arrested and taken into police custody where she confessed to having poisoned the thirty-two men with arsenic when she suspected they had been unfaithful to her or when she believed their interest in her was waning. She also confessed to the police that on occasion she liked to sit in her armchair amidst the coffins, surrounded by all of her former suitors.[6]
Renczi also confessed to murdering her two husbands and her son Lorenzo. She told police that one day when her son had come to pay her a visit, he had accidentally discovered the coffins in her wine cellar and threatened to blackmail her and she subsequently poisoned him and disposed of his body.[6]
She was convicted of thirty-five murders and sentenced to life-imprisonment, where she subsequently died. It is said that her story may have inspired Joseph Kesselring's play Arsenic and Old Lace.[5]
In 2005, The Discovery Channel's three-part series Deadly Women recounted the history of Renczi, portrayed through re-enactments and commentaries from FBI agents and profilers and a forensic pathologist. Renczi was featured in the series' first episode entitled Obsession.[8]

The 10 Most Heinous Female Serial Killers of All Time

Countess Elizabeth Báthory (17 August 1560 – 21 August 1614). AKA “The Hungarian Blood Countess.”

Question: What do you get for torturing and killing possibly over 600 (more likely between 80-300) people in your very own castle, complete with a dungeon filled with custom made tools?

Answer: House arrest. Of course, her main helpers (accomplices) had their fingers torn from their hands by the bone and were thrown into a fire while still alive. What did Bathory get? House arrest-WITH room service. Was there really so much blood left over from brutally murdering virginal young girls that Bathory was able to bath in it? Well, a girl’s gotta maintain her youth somehow. After all, this was prior to the era of Oil of Olay. What about reports of her ripping out pieces of her victims flesh with clamper tools and then making them eat the chunks she pulled from their bodies? Hmmm, house arrest seems fit. In fact, authorities were well aware of the going ons at that castle for some time, but until she started picking off the more minor royalty, she was basically shunned for prosecution.

    Aileen Wuornos(February 29, 1956 – October 9, 2002).
Murdered seven men claiming self defense. Of course most of them were shot several times in the chest and head. Wuornos later stated, “"I killed those men, robbed them as cold as ice. And I'd do it again, too. There's no chance in keeping me alive or anything, because I'd kill again. I have hate crawling through my system...I am so sick of hearing this 'she's crazy' stuff. I've been evaluated so many times. I'm competent, sane, and I'm trying to tell the truth. I'm one who seriously hates human life and would kill again." She was convicted and put to death in 2002.

Jeanne Weber(October 7, 1874 – 1910). This French woman got her kicks by strangling the life out of children, including her own. She got away with 8-10 strangulations (despite evidence she was committing the crimes) before finally being convicted as people assumed she looked more like a grieving mother who lost her children to illness rather than a cold-blooded calculated criminal. After she was convicted, she was declared insane and carted off to a mental asylum where she eventually strangled herself to death in her cell.

Jane Toppan(1857-193 AKA “Jolly Jane.” Massachusetts born small town gossip and arsonist turned poison administering serial killer. Although, she first had to register for nursing school to learn about atrophine, morphine and a host of other lethal drug combinations that would get the job done. One of her traits was to hop into bed with a recently poisoned victim and hold them as the life was slipping out of them from being poisoned. Authorities eventually caught on to her shenanigans after she poisoned almost an entire family she was working for in a six-week period. While in custody she confessed to thirty-one murders, but others estimate during her ten year working period the number could be closer to one hundred. Toppan spent the remaining years of her life in a mental asylum until passing at the ripe old age of eighty-four.

Maria Catherina Swanenburg (1839 - 1915) AKA “Good Mie” was a Dutch serial killer responsible for poisoning twenty-seven people in a three year span from 1880-1883. Her motive appeared to be greed, as she would care for the poor/sick and pocket their insurance or inheritance money after they expired. Arsenic was her poison of choice. She may have murdered up to ninety people, with almost fifty of her victims surviving the dosages. She even poisoned to death her own parents before starting up with the rest of her victims. She was tried and convicted in 1885 later dying in prison in 1915.

Vera Renczi (1903 – unknown). This Romanian was another lady fascinated with arsenic, and poisoned thirty-five people during the 1920’s-1930’s, starting with her own husband. She later remarried and did it again, before unleashing her full fury on any unlucky sap willing to have an affair with her. By the time authorities caught on to her antics, she had a nifty collection of thirty-two coffins jam packed in her wine cellar. There were poisoned men in each of those tombs decaying away.

Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova (1730 - 1801). This Russian noble serial killer was thought to have beaten, tortured, and murdered over one-hundred young female peasants working under her. Similar to Bathory, complaints about her possibly killing those who worked for her fell on deaf ears due to her standing in society. After an uproar from many of the victims grieving family members, Saltykova was finally tried and convicted for killing thirty-eight women. Unfortunately, the death penalty was abolished at the time so she was given a couple of alternate punishments. First, Saltykova was placed on a platform in chains for all of Moscow to read a sign attached to her that she was a torturer and murderer. She was then hauled off to live out her remaining years in the basement of a convent.

Mary Ann Cotton (1832-1873). It’s believed she poisoned up to twenty-one people with arsenic before being captured and hung to death. Most of her victims were husbands, lovers, and anyone else unfortunate enough to come into her life. Mary Ann Cotton-she’s dead and she’s rotten-she lies in her bed-with her eyes wide open-Sing, sing, oh, what can I sing-Mary Ann Cotton is tied up with a string. Where, where? Up in the air. Selling black puddens a penny a pair. 19th Century British nursery rhyme. That’s Okaaay, I guess. Not exactly catchy enough for little children to be singing at the play yard. Mine would go something like this: Mary Ann Cotton, boy was she rotten. She poisoned her family, with arsenic candy. Some thought it was gastric fever, but it was the poison acting more like a cleaver. She was later caught and hung, but the mystery of why had only begun. Well, probably not much better.

Anna Zanzwiger (1760-1811). This German serial killer had a fascination with poisoning off the female competition to any man she hoped would court her. Unfortunately for her, Zanzwiger’s looks were often compared to that of a toad’s features. She even went so far as to dip a child’s teething biscuit in arsenic laced milk in hopes of murdering the infant in her care. She was arrested in 1811, and beheaded that same year. Her dead body was then put on display for a time for the entire town to see. Just after Zanzwiger’s trial, she was quoted to have said “It is perhaps better for the community that I should die, as it would be impossible for me to stop poisoning people.”

Gesina “I was born without a conscience” Gottfried (1798-182. Gottfried hailed from Germany and was said to be a beautiful woman with flowing blond hair. Of course, that was on the outside. On the inside, she was a despicable monster who experienced the height of ecstasy watching the people she would poison die. Not even her family was free of her vicious cruelty as she poisoned three husbands, her parents, brother, and even her own children before being captured in 1828. Authorities wasted little time and beheaded Gottfried that same year.

He's meticulous, cunning, precise and detailed. I believe the killer is a male because biologically speaking, men are more logical than women.

    The Virgin of Nuremberg
The name of this instrument seems to have its origin from a prototype that was built in the town of Nuremberg. It is also said that this sort of sarcophagus had a maiden face carved on its front door probably aimed at making this horrible container look more refined.
The sarcophagus was fitted with spikes on the inside that pierced different parts of the body but never transfixed vital organs in order to keep the victim alive, hanging upright.
The device would be opened both from the front and from the back side without the victim being able to get out. The container was so thick that no shriek could be heard from outside unless the doors were opened.
When the sarcophagus doors were shut back, the spikes penetrated the same parts of the body and into the same wounds as before, inflicting a long and cruel agony.
