well if you are from that time who underwent military training and spent years fighting the war, you would really thoughen up physically. and winters is one guy who continues to swim everyday. if you look at todays generation, there is tv, computer games, internet, lots of junk and fatty foods. young people continue to stock up on cholesterol and sweets and sit on ther chairs all day, nowadays people rarely reach that age
While it may be true that Winters, specifically, had a regimen and lifestyle that perhaps aided his extended lifespan, it is not logical to automatically conclude that "today's generation" are living shorter lifespans due to all the stuff you've mentioned (i.e. junk food, etc.). If you take a quick browse here:
Life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
you'd realize that there are far greater factors that contribute to life expectancy, and at a recent TED talk, a health researcher pointed out that life expectancy statistics indicate that its mostly regionalistic, i.e. if you live in certain regions of the world, your life expectancy is expected to increase. Reinforce this with the fact that the average life span during the middle ages was around 40-50 years old.

Chesty Puller had five Navy Crosses, the most bemedaled Marine ever, for five different actions and you'd think he could've gotten the MOH for any one of those. That he was wounded in action showed he was no wimpy REMF (Rear Echelon Mother F*****) commander directing from the rear.
Some historians however are not too hot about Puller's leadership in Peleliu. He allowed his forces to be decimated and was in denial over the fact that they were in dire need of reinforcement and relief by (*GASP*) the Army. Some might even say he lost the big picture.
Let's see how this issue is treated in The Pacific.

im not automatically concluding. just stating some factors. well its still there from the link you posted:
genetic disorders, obesity, access to health care, diet, exercise, tobacco smoking, drug use and excessive alcohol use.
Also in the middle ages, medicine was still primitive and practice of healthy sanitation was almost non-existent, you get a simple fever because of germs and harmful bacteria because you did not wash your hands properly and you could already be dead. nowadays, just plainly taking OTC medicine like paracetamol biogesic plus ample rest and water will do its magic and you live another day. there is no such thing back then. you go to battle, get hit by an arrow or wounded, you can get all sorts of nasty infections and you're as good as dead. no wonder people dont live long in that era there were no medics yet nor antibiotics you know. try eating junk food everyday for starters, do no exercise, hang out in istorya all day and rack up your posts as much as you can and see what happens after 10-20 yrs or maybe due to the advance in medicine, you could prob survive up to 30 yrs more. of course, talking about life expectancy being regionalistic, that is just logical. in other parts of the world, there is easy access to health care like in the US with their newly-passed health care bill or in scandinavia or even in makati where health care is free and some are less polluted, standard of living is higher, and perhaps, life is less stressful (i.e less traffic, less crime rate, good and healthy food readily accessible, good weather, etc...). and that helps a lot in extending your life. anyway this is way OT already and would be better off in another thread. back to the pacific!
