FOR BICHIR LOVERS AND THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT THESE AMAZING CREATURES YET...
Here are some nice pictures of the different Polypterus varieties, of course with short facts about them

    ROPE FISH

Source:Rope fish image by Poznos on Photobucket

    Common name: Ropefish, reedfish, Snakefish

    Scientific name: Erpetoichthys calabaricus

Origin: West Africa , Cameroon, Nigeria,

Size: Up to 36" (92 cm) reported in the wild, but usually 12"(30cm) in tanks

    Description:
Ropefish as compared to other polys is very elongated and lacks the pelvic fins found on the Polypterus species. The dorsal surface is olive green to brownish, with the ventral surface being a lighter yellow-orange colour. There is a dark spot on the base of the pectoral fins. Some don't consider ropefish as a variety of bichirs.

    GUINEAN BICHIR

Source:Polypterus ansorgii - WaterWolves - Exotic, Rare and Predatory Fish Since 1998!

    Common name: Guinean Bichir

    Scientific name: Polypterus ansorgii

Origin: Africa: described from the Corbal River (Corubal) in Guinea Bissau and recently reported in the Niger basin near Kouroussa in Guinea and in lake Kainji and the Ogun River in Nigeria

    Size: 11" (28cm)

    Description:
    P. Ansorgii, considered as the "Holy Grail", is a rare bichir greenish-black coloration with large dark blotches on the flanks. The jaws are of similar length, though the lower jaw is likely to protude slightly on mature specimens. The 12-15 dorsal finlets extend forward to the rear of the pectoral fins.

    LAPREDEI BICHIR

Source:Exotic Fish Catalogue - Page 10 - PALHS Online Community Forum

    Common name: Lapradei Bichir

    Scientific name: Polypterus bichir lapredei

    Origin: West Africa

    Size: Approx. 30" (75cm)

    Description:
Grey to greenish-grey colouration, with a paler ventral surface. Horizontal bands evident on the upper surface from the head to the dorsal finlets, and extending about halfway along the side of the body from behind the gills. The flanks have irregular vertical bands. Prominent lower jaw longer than upper jaw. 13-17 dorsal spines. P. lapradei is very difficult to distinguish from P. bichir, particularly when markings are faded, as in stressed or newly imported fish. This species is now a fairly common import, and captive-bred fish are also available in the trade.

    ARMOURED BICHIR

Source:Armored Bichir (Polypterus delhezi) by Fruitbat - Aquarium Advice - Aquarium Forum Community

Common name: Armoured Bichir, Banded Bichir

    Scientific name: Polypterus delhezi

Origin: Central basin of Congo River, Africa

    Size: Up to 14"(35cm)

    Description:
One of the most distinctly-marked of the genus, Polypterus delhezi has an elongated body with a light gray to olive gray background coloration on its dorsal side grading to a yellow-white to white color ventrally. There are numerous black specks, sometimes forming a reticulated (net-like) pattern on the back and sides. P. delhezi has 7 to 8 nearly vertical black bars that are more or less distinct depending on the individual. Polypterus delhezi has a relatively small head for its body size. The tubular nostrils are prominent.

    CONGO BICHIR

    Source:http://www.fishbase.us/tools/uploadp...ongicus001.jpg

    Common name: Congo Bichir

    Scientific name: Polypterus endlicheri congicus

Origin: Gazetteer Central Africa: Congo basin and Lake Tanganyika

    Size: max 39" (97cm)

    Description:
Colour can be yellowish-brown to grey. There are several dark vertical bands. Black spots are often present on the head region. The lower jaw is more prominent, extending beyond the upper jaw. Dorsal spines extend forward to the rear of the pectoral fins.

    SADDLED BICHIR

    Source:http://www.fishbase.us/tools/uploadp.../6img_2646.jpg

Common name: Saddled Bichir, Red Bichir, Giant Banded Bichir
    Scientific name: Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri

Origin: Africa: Nile River, Chad basin, Niger River, Volta River, Bandama River, upper Comoé River and Ouémé River

Size: 30" (75cm). However this is rarely achieved in captivity.

    Description:
Irregular vertical bands are present along the sides of the fish, which do not extend fully onto the ventral surface, which is a uniform whitish-yellow colour. Black spots are present on the head, body and caudal fin. Prominent lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. 11-15 dorsal finlets.

    ORNATE BICHIR

Source:Exotic Fish Catalogue - Page 5 - PALHS Online Community Forum

    Common name: Ornate Bichir
    Scientific name: Polypterus ornatipinnis

Origin: Central and East Africa: Congo river basin, Lake Tanganyika

Size: 18"(46cm) but some have been reported to exceed 24" (61cm)

    Description:
The striking black and yellow patterning of this species extends into the fins, making for a very attractively patterned bichir. The head has a finely reticulated pattern. 9-11 dorsal spines present. This is the largest of the protuding upper jaw species of Polypterus.

OT: Grabe, mao ni ang pinaka interesante na thread para nako. hehehehe thanks guys. really helped me a lot understand this hobby better. Kudos ACE!

BTW, don't you think better kung separate ang thread for flora from fauna? para dili makalibog? if that happens, maybe we can sticky them.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Nevermind, stickied!

I have deleted OT's and duplicate posts to keep this thread clean. I would like to suggest a Master List at the beginning of the page linked to their individual posts. Example:

    Flora:
    1. this post

    Fauna:
    1. this post

If that's too much to ask, that's fine with me. Hinay-hinayon nalang nako ug tabang ug edit.

All other discussions not related to this topic should be rerouted to the ACE Main Discussion Thread. Thanks!

    Thanks for the Sticky sir..

Supposedly sir when i started this thread, every new info was numbered as Fauna #, Flora # or Gen. Info/Topic# to differentiate them all.. then the table of contents at the front would be updated.. I may update the Table of Contents later if i'm no longer busy to keep up with any new information...

Attn guys: Please continue/revive the old practice of putting Fauna#/Flora#/Gen. Info# para sayon ra i-update sa table of contents..and pls avoid OT as much as possible... special thanks to those who updated this thread...

    Good day sir Aqua_coco

You actually had a very very dangerous mixture of substrate. Mas better pa if you use just plane garden soil but we always advocate clay at the bottom layer dayun fine sand as final covering. You can buy all this in pottery shops or pet shops (ex Riverfront colon). Dont use that fertilizer again kay na overdose to mao namatay imo fish and plants. Your clay is already has nutrients pud sir. You can also buy ferts intended for planted aquarium nga di kayo mahal. Hope that helps sir. Thank you
