Broadcaster GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) remains on track to reach its yearend target as it finished the first nine months of 2009 with a 10% increase in net income versus the same period last year.

GMA’s net income jumped to P2.149 billion from the P1.961 billion netted in the same period in 2008. This, despite the series of calamities that recently struck the country and the global financial crisis that caused a decrease in ad spend among major advertisers this year.

Gross revenues for the first nine months went up by 7% to P10.025 billion. Airtime revenues from TV and radio contributed P9.243 billion, while subscription fees from International operations and other revenue-generating activities of subsidiaries made P782 million.

We remain ahead of competition in terms of sales. Barring any major event that will affect the company's performance for the remaining months, I think 2009 will be another breakthrough year for the Network. Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, Chairman & CEO

Total operating expenses were kept to a single-digit growth of 9% to P5.555 billion. Production costs increased by 2% year-on-year to P2.922 billion.

General and administrative expenses (GAEX) increased by 18% to P2.632 billion primarily due to the growth in personnel costs as the company inked a 3-year Collective Bargaining Agreement in the third quarter which included a hefty signing bonus.

Nine-month earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) settled at P3.713 billion.

Subscription revenues for GMA International jumped 54% over last year. The steady growth in the subscriber count of GMA's two international channels – GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV) and GMA Life TV (GLTV) led the revenue upswing for GMA International. Both channels are now available in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Hong Kong.

GPTV subscribers totaled 225,000 by the end of the third quarter, or a 17% increase year-on-year. The channel has an estimated 1.1 million viewers worldwide. GLTV subscribers are now at 109,000 or around 600,000 viewers worldwide. GLTV has grown by 142% in terms of subscriber count since last year.

GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), meanwhile, has syndicated locally made programs to as far as Africa, Middle East, and Europe. GWI had a positive revenue contribution with P28.3 million worth of syndication sales in the third quarter, equivalent to 90% of its total projected revenues for 2009.

Just recently, GWI sold the rights of the Philippine adaptation of Marimar and Dyesebel to countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Singapore, and Malaysia.

GMA Network Chairman, President, and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon expressed confidence that the Network can achieve and even exceed its net income target by yearend. “We remain ahead of competition in terms of sales. Barring any major event that will affect the company's performance for the remaining months, I think 2009 will be another breakthrough year for the Network," Gozon said.

GMA Films produced two movies in the second half of the year – Spoiled Brat The Movie starred by Ogie Alcasid and Michael V., and Patient X top billed by Richard Gutierrez and Cristine Reyes. Patient X is currently being shown in local cinemas. The official entry to the 2009 MMFF – Panday The Movie starring Bong Revilla, Jr. will be shown in December.

GMA Radio’s flagship AM station DZBB remained ahead of DZRH in Mega Manila according to the third quarter survey conducted by Nielsen. In Cebu, both the FM and AM radio stations of GMA ranked second overall. Barangay LS’ Talk To Papa won the Best Counseling Program in the recently concluded Catholic Mass Media Awards.

The Network continues its Regional Expansion Projects to strengthen signal coverage in key provinces. The new five-KW TV Relay in Mt. Amuyao, Mt. Province which airs in Channel 5 was activated last October 12. Transmitters and antenna systems for TV-10 Sto. Tomas, Benguet, TV-12 Cagayan de Oro, TV-7 Naga City, and TV-12 Mt. Banoy, Batangas were likewise upgraded.

Meanwhile, GMA Network sustained its lead in viewer-rich Mega Manila and Total Urban Luzon based on data from AGB Nielsen Philippines in September.

GMA Network executives (from left to right) Executive Vice President Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr., Chairman Felipe L. Gozon, and Chief Financial Officer Felipe S. Yalong announce that the company’s net income jumped to P2.149 billion from the P1.961 billion netted in the same period in 2008, despite the global financial crisis that depressed advertising throughout the media industry.</B>

GMA Network continued to dominate Mega Manila with an average audience share of 40.5%, 8.6 percentage points higher than competition’s 31.9%. Mega Manila TV households account for 49.3% of the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM).

GMA Network crowded the list of overall top 30 programs in Mega Manila in the third quarter. Eighteen of the top 30 shows were from GMA. Darna took the number one spot in the roster with an average household rating of 39.5%.

From January to September, 23 of the overall top 30 programs were still Kapuso-made. Primetime hits Darna, Luna Mystika, Zorro, Totoy Bato, Lalola, Gagambino, and 24 Oras were the top seven programs in the roster.

Across all genres, from animation to drama to musical to newscast, GMA shows also dominated their counterparts from ABS-CBN.

In Total Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77% of NUTAM TV households, GMA managed an average audience share of 39% in September, higher by 4 percentage points than ABS-CBN’s 35%.

In the third quarter, 16 of the overall top 30 programs in Urban Luzon based on household ratings were all from GMA. Darna remains number one with an average household rating of 36.5%.

From January to September, GMA had 18 entries in the list of overall top 30 programs in Urban Luzon. Darna and Luna Mystika were the top raters in the roster.

In terms of Advertising Minutes, GMA Network decreased by 6.6% in Q3 versus the same period in 2008 as total industry advertising minutes among free-to-air TV channels went down by 5.8%. ABS-CBN, on the other hand, experienced a double-digit slump of 16.6% compared to last year.

From January to September, the industry had a 1.5% decrease in advertising minutes with GMA down by only 2.1% compared to ABS-CBN's 14.8% decrease.

Read my other posts. I bet you missed my attacks on ABS-CBN.

The best way to beat the two fat networks is simple - turn the TV off.
