It is referred to as the ASIAN RICE CRISIS.... So you guys think Gloria Arroyo or the Philippines for that matter has sooo much clout as to influence this event? You people are giving Gloria waaay too much credit...

Healthy buffer stocks in the world's largest rice exporter, Thailand, are shrinking. Thailand is not exporting due to rice shortages... Gloria's fault?
Vietnam is soon to stop exporting due to its own rice production shortages..... Gloria's fault
In Bangladesh, rat breeding out-paces the bamboo flower growth, and soon the animals turn to ravaging rice stalks and vegetables in the affected region.. Those rats where Gloria's pets?
India's ban on rice exports follows a gradual limiting by the government of exports over the past few months. In October 2007, rice exports priced under $425 per tonne were banned and on December 31 the floor price rose to $505 a tonne. hmmm Okay, Gloria ordered India to do so
Large rice importers such as Myanmar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia are worst affected.... Hmmmmmm kay .... Gloria's fault WOW

I do believe the government is partly to blame but the GOVERNMENT HAS NEGLECTED OUR AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY WAAAAY BEFORE Arroyo's time... We led the RICE PRODUCTION in our region back in the 60's, remember we established the IRRI? But time has since passed, we dropped the ball and now we are suffering for it....

You guys think that drunkard ERAP can do better at a time like this? What is he going to do? Punch his way to make rice like in the movies?

as expected of secretaries, pipila ra jd akong nahinumduman n secretaries n nisulti n naglisod ang supply sa ilang gidumalaan... in this case Yap will really insist on saying rice supply is adequate in a time like this... Just heard from the report what made the prices go up, fertilizer daw ug oil price hikes...

sa akong nabasa sa title sa poll... "Who do u think is to be blamed for the rice crisis?" so we are asking now who to blame right?

let's face it, all of us are affected with what's happening around, i too as a regular consumer cant say i will just let it bee when rice gets to 50++/kilo, thank God la p... pero I really pray n d jd unta ta moabot ana n time...

NFA exec sacked for mishandling of imported rice
    By John Unson
Monday, March 31, 2008, Phil. Star

A high-ranking official of the National Food Authority (NFA) in North Cotabato has been ordered relieved from his post after allegedly approving the distribution of 21,000 bags of imported rice to private traders in the province.

Mariano Bernad, NFA North Cotabato provincial manager, was replaced by Rey Salvatiera, an officer of NFA for Central Mindanao. Rogelio Macutay, regional manager of NFA Central Mindanao, said he ordered the relief of Bernad to pave the way for an investigation of his alleged mishandling of imported rice stocks supposed to be sold cheap by NFA-accredited traders in the local market...

if pinoys just know how to invest their money properly like rice planting, then we will back on track to where we are no. 1 before.

i have known a few acquaintances who invested their money for planting rice in Leyte and so far they are doing good. u don't even have to buy the rice field..it's like this: you strike a deal w/ the farmers to supply seedlings and some supplies. u get the most part of the share of the harvest.

Philippines battles rocketing cost of rice -- Arroyo

    Agence France-Presse
    First Posted 18:37:00 03/31/2008

HONG KONG -- The Philippines will boost rice production by seven percent this year, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said in Hong Kong Monday, as the country tries to protect itself against spiralling global food prices.

"We have recognized that farming, not just in the Philippines, but in many parts of Asia, needs to be modernized," she told an annual investors forum run by Credit Suisse here.

"We have been spending unprecedented amounts in our agricultural sector -- irrigation, seed support, research and development.

"That is why we are expecting this year a seven percent increase in rice production."

Arroyo, who is in Hong Kong to try and attract foreign investment into the Philippines, said the government would also be providing targeted relief to help the poor deal with the rocketing cost of the country's staple food.

Rice is a political commodity in the Philippines, and any fluctuations in price and shortages in supply could potentially rouse unrest, analysts have warned.

Last week, the Philippines signed a deal with Vietnam to supply 1.5 million tons of rice this year to avoid a shortage, and crack down on illegal rice trading, and has also bought stocks from Thailand and Pakistan.
