other than life sentencing, there MUST be a death penalty to the deserving,
life imprisonment.....
the theory on social deviance, criminality and penalization posits reasons (some of which may counter one another) on the need for imprisonment;
a.) as a form of punishment from the society to whom the convict belons to;
b.) as a form of retribution for the victim of the the deed that was committed;
c.) as a form of deterrent for other people who might replicate the same crime;
d.) to isolate the convict from the rest of the population to ensure the general public's safety;
e.) to rehabilitate convicts so that they can become functional members of the society, instead of remaining as social deviants.
in recent years, retribution and punishment as reasons for imprisonment have been downplayed and focuses instead on rehabilitation as the main paradigm that should be followed in dealing with penitentiaries. death penalty, more associated with the first two, and arguably the third reason, is deemed to be not in line with the current trend of humanistic and rehabilitative penology.

I agree with gareb. as long as the person is alive, there is still a chance for that person to change.
Yes, death would surely put an end to the possibility of him doing the crime again. Not only that, you also deprived him of the change to rectify the mistake he had done.
On the darker side however, some thoughts had been in my mind on how eleminate crimes in our society.
Say for rape cases. How about amputation. First rape offense, cut it half. Second offense, cut everything what is left. Amputation should be done through surgery though.
After the first offense, he would then have one lifetime remembering it everytime he pees that if he would do that crime again, he will do the peeing girl style.

If caught in the act - death penalty for heinous crime !
For repeat offenders of non-heinous crimes - death penalty !
Death penalty or life sentence can't solve the peace and order of the country. Poverty is the main reason of bad peace and order situation and Police should need additional people and the community should also cooperate to the authorities so that we have a good peace and order situation.
Tamblot: that isn't really 'humanistic' either, is it?
hacxcena: poverty can be a factor, but with the matter of social deviance, there are a lot more factors to be considered than just mere poverty, and an equally many paradigms and perspectives to view it.
there is always the cultural and social context. how one views women, how socially integrated a person is in his community, what kind of community a person belongs to, and how one views the the imperative of following laws are some examples. another could be the fairness and equality of how laws are implemented and followed, as most of those who are caught or who are in jail are those that cannot afford the legal fees needed to give them a chance at freedom. another is what kind of laws are at place and who generally benefits from them.
maintaining a police presence is often only a short term solution to criminality. aside from the reality that some policemen themselves are the ones perpetuating crime, a heavy handed police force often encourages the kind of social deviance that borders towards political subversion. inability to understand the social mechanisms that give birth and nurture criminality, will only have us needing more rooms in the penitentiary. and i am not even talking about the snail-like pace of the justice system, assuming that there is a credible one in this country.

DEATH PENALTY! IMO, this is suppose to be effective in curbing crime but why does crime in our country prevail? because the President literally has no "balls" to implement it.
