Charlie Villanueva stays in Detroit to improve body, game

After a disappointing first season with the Pistons, Villanueva said he would spend the summer in the Detroit area and be a regular visitor to the Pistons' practice facility to improve his game.

"I didn't like the way last season ended and I wanted to get the ball rolling for next season," Villanueva said Thursday after a workout at the practice facility.

Villanueva averaged 11.9 points and 4.7 rebounds last season after signing a five-year, $35 million contract last summer. Marred with a series of injuries (hamstring, plantar fasciitis, broken nose, back), Villanueva was at best an inconsistent performer.

Villanueva expects the workouts this summer with Arnie Kander, Pistons strength and conditioning coach, to reduce injuries, while also making him more effective in games.

"I want to change my whole body," said Villanueva, who wants to get stronger and quicker.

TORONTO (AP) — Detroit Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva (FSY) faces a charge of domestic assault after a May 19 incident in Burlington, Ontario.

The 25-year-old Villanueva was released by Halton Regional Police on a promise to appear in court on July 9. The name of complainant and other details about the incident weren't available Tuesday.

His lawyer, Owen Wigderson, says Villanueva, "denies all allegations of wrongdoing and I'm very confident that he'll be exonerated."
