COACH Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. earlier feared his University of the Visayas Green Lancers would become complacent along the way – and his fears happened right on the championship series opening game.

The Lancers paid dearly for taking the Southwestern University lightly as the Cobras secured Game 1 with a 77-72 victory to lead 1-0 in the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball Finals Series at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

But coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba downplayed his team’s chances of winning the championship.

“You can’t determine championship victory by winning one game. Game 1 is nothing in a best-of-five series. UV will try to bounce back strong and that is what we are going to prepare for,” Alcoseba told reporters after the game.

UV had control in the opening quarter before the game slowly slipped through their hands in the middle of the second period.

The game was tied at 23-all at the 6:38 mark of the second, when Justin Aboude and Joseph Nalos anchored SWU’s 14-8 burst that gave the Cobras a 37-31 lead heading to the halftime break.

Alcoseba tried a quicker five at the start of the third, which proved to be a disadvantage as UV inched within 44-46 at the 4:03 mark. However, a technical foul slapped on Jerome Silva for pointing a finger at the referee at the 3:46 mark and an unsportsmanlike conduct given to Rene Saycon 40 seconds later doused cold water on the Lancers’ building momentum, for SWU to hang on to lead, 55-50, entering the final quarter.

Taking a cue from a momentous third, SWU then went all out in the final quarter as Bonifacio Guillena sank two and Nalos nailed a triple, while UV struggled on its shots, including a 2-of-7 free throw shooting. The Cobras built a 15-point lead, 72-57, with 5:29 left to play.

The Lancers were able to inch within 68-74 but it was not enough as Aboude secured the win for SWU with a thunderous slam dunk after splitting his free throws.

Guillena topscored with 19 points, while Bregondo and Aboude finished with 13 and 12, respectively.

UV’s Hernal “Wowie” Escocio made history after he was named the first Rookie-MVP of Cesafi during the awarding ceremony made before the game.

Joining Escocio in the Mythical 5 Selection are Quinton Brian Heruela of the University of Cebu Webmasters, UV team captain Jerome Silva, University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars’ Abulaiz Suliman and Monbert Arong of SWU.

    SWU WINS GAME 1
Cobras find UV’s weakness to take 1-0 lead in seniors finals; Escosio named MVP and ROY
    By Jonas Panerio

Cebu Daily News 7:10 am | Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

    Game Wednesday:
    Cebu Coliseum
    6 p.m. – SHS-AdC vs. UV (Jrs.)

The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras finally figured out how to beat the University of the Visayas Green Lancers as they took Game 1 of the best-of-five finals with a, 77-72 victory yesterday in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

After two failed tries, SWU was finally able to find UV’s weak spot and exploited it to the hilt as the Cobras utilized their speed and accurate outside sniping to break the game wide open at the start of the fourth canto.

Then, with UV breathing down their necks in a frantic comeback attempt, the Cobras turned to their Cameroonian import Justin Aboude to put out the fire and draw first blood in this colorful rivalry that spans over 40 years.

Meanwhile, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles will try to take one more step closer towards the title that has eluded them for the last three years as they face the reigning champions University of the Visayas Baby Lancers in Game 2 of their own finals showdown today in the juniors division at the same venue.

It took the gallant efforts of Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw to bail out the Eagles from an impending loss as his crucial makes in crunchtime gave them a heartstopping 80-76 win in Game 1 last Monday.

They will try to achieve the same result today but head coach Rommel Rasmo is not taking any chances with the Baby Lancers, who he saw come back from similar deficits to them in last year’s finals, which the latter won in five games.

“I have to make sure that my players will be physically and mentally ready. We have to be focused for 40 minutes so that we could play our game. As for (Paul) Desiderio, we will do our best to contain him,” said Rasmo in an interview yesterday.

UV’s star wingman and the reigning league MVP Desiderio produced his usual average of 31 points against the Eagles in Game 1.
In the seniors match yesterday, the game was neck-to-neck in the first three periods with SWU holding on to a 55-50 lead. But the Cobras honed in on the basket at the start of the final stanza, which they kicked off with a 12-1 run.

Power forward, Bernie Bregondo made a mid-range jumper and a putback while the returning Bon Guillena hit a pull-up jumper in that stretch. Joseph Nalos and Guillena then swished consecutive three-pointers to give them a 67-51 lead with 6:57 left.

UV’s John Abad fuelled a comeback but SWU kept its composure down the stretch en route to the victory.

“We now have the confidence. We now know that we can beat UV. But the championship is not won with just one game. We need two more,” said SWU coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.

John Abad paced UV with 17 points but nobody else on the team reached double-figures.

Most disappointing of them all was the performance of power forward Wowie Escosio, who before the game was awarded the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards, a first in this league. He finished with just nine points.

    SWU nakauna

(BANAT SPORTS)

Baby Lancers look to bounce back in Game 2
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Wednesday, September 26, 2012

ANDRES Paul Desiderio proved to be an unstoppable force for the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers. However, his lonesome efforts were not enough and instead worked to the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles’ advantage as can be seen in their last three match-ups in the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) High School Division tournament.

Today, in Game 2 of their best-of-five finals series, Desiderio needs a strong back-up that would help solve the problems that have hounded the Baby Lancers on their past three losses to the Magis Eagles, including the Game 1 loss last Monday, in order to even the series.

Game time is set at 5:30 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.

Just like their past three meetings, Desiderio was unstoppable as he scattered 31 points but anemic contributions from UV’s big men, especially Leonard Santillan and Prince Canete who were non-existent in both offense and defense, did them in.

But it would be a different Eagles UV will be facing today as coach Rommel Rasmo would not let his top scorer Dawn Henric Ochea to get in an early foul trouble again, which had limited his playing time and efficiency inside the court in Game 1.

Ochea was in early foul trouble and scored only eight points on SHS-AdC’s 80-76 last Monday.

UV’s defense, meanwhile, is expected to focus on Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw, the Eagles’ savior in Game 1, who finished with 20 points including 11 in the final period, with nine made in the final three minutes of the game.

But aside from Araw-Araw, the Baby Lancers had to neutralize Jr. NBA Philippine team member Rendell Senining, who gave them problems especially in the three-point area.

UV veteran coach Delfin Pepito Jr., however, still has loads of tricks up his sleeves to keep the hopes of the defending champions of denying the Magis Eagles from winning its first-ever high school title.

(BANAT SPORTS

SHS-Ateneo Eagles rout UV to take 2-0 lead in finals
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Wednesday, September 26, 2012

DAWN Henric Ochea showed why he was named tournament MVP as the shifty center-forward led the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles to a 96-82 win over the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers in Game 2 for a 2-0 lead in 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. high school finals at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Ochea, who was named tournament MVP before the opening tip-off, scattered 29 points before collecting his fifth and final foul in the final 87 seconds, but at that point, the Magis Eagles were safely a win away from clinching their first Cesafi high school basketball title.

While the guards of the Eagles struggled offensively Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw and Rendell Senining--the big men of SHS-AdC stepped up with Ochea providing not only offensive scoring but the needed rebounds as well.

UV, meanwhile, struggled heavily with only Andres Paul Desiderio as the lone bright spot on coach Delfin Pepito’s offensive arsenal.

The victory of the Eagles could be attributed to their unrelenting defense.

SHS-AdC played full-court defense from the opening until the final buzzer that resulted to the minimal output of the Baby Lancers.

Coach Pepito did not start with his usual starting five to give his best players more time but he was forced to send Desiderio, Ernesto Limetares and Ralph Dinolan earlier than expected after they were held scoreless in the first three minutes of the game while the Eagles were already on target.

Desiderio then scored six as UV tied the game at 10 at the 3:00 mark of the first and that proved to be the only deadlock of the game as SHS-AdC dropped a 10-1 blast to re-establish control.

As the Eagles built a 36-23 lead, UV crept back with a 10-0 run to move within 36-33 before Felixberto Jaboneta IV scored four straight points to prevent UV from taking over the lead going to the halftime break.

But instead of adjusting, UV failed to break the pressure game of the Eagles and SHS-AdC secured the game following a 29-10 blitz for the biggest lead of the night, 69-47, with 1:01 left in the third period.

Aside from Ochea, Fletcher Criss Galvez delivered 16 points for the Eagles, while Jair Edrei Igna made 12 . Desiderio scored the game high 34 points for UV, while Limetares and Dinolan combined for 21 points.

Magis Eagles soar one win away from history SHS- Ateneo takes 2-0 lead vs. Baby Lancers in CESAFI finals
Ni Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 27, 2012 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Henric Dawn Ochea showed the stuff of an MVP as the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles pounded defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers anew, 96-82, to take a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five juniors division finals of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles, thus, moved one victory away from clinching their first ever championship in CESAFI history. They could practically seal that monumental feat with another conquest of the struggling Baby Lancers in tomorrow's Game 3.

Ochea fouled out late in the game, but he already erupted with 29 points to make up from his insignificant eight points in their 80-76 victory during the series opener.

The other thing of beauty for SHS-Ateneo is that Ochea got huge support from Fletcher Galvez and Felixberto Jaboneta, Jr. who banged in 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The Baby Lancers of coach Delfin Pepito, Jr. trailed all the way and managed only to tie the count on two occasions at 6-all and 10-all.

The Rommel Rasmo-mentored Magis Eagles enjoyed only a three-point edge at the intermission, 40-37, but took control of the game with authority in the final half. They had a furious third period explosion ending it with a 19-point bubble, 70-51.

In the face of SHS-Ateneo's fiery uprising, a very frustrated UV coach Pepito was whistled for a technical foul for continuous complaining. With only a few seconds left in the third period, he threw his official's ID into the air as a gesture of protest to the referees' call.

During the pre-game awarding rites, Ochea bagged the regular season MVP trophy. He was joined into the Mythical Five by his teammate Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw, Andres Paul Desiderio of the UV Baby Lancers, Mark Kong of the CIT-U Baby Wildcats and Michael Lorenzo Balankig of the CEC Dragons.

Araw-Araw, who topscored with 18 points for SHS-Ateneo in Game 1, just made seven points last night, but his pesky defense had given the Magis Eagles the huge impact they wanted to happen.

Desiderio, in his usual explosive form, fired 34 points but couldn't weave any magic for the Baby Lancers, who were down by 18 points, 95-77, with a little over a minute left in the contest.

Ernesto Limitares and Ralph Jude Dinolan were the other UV players to dish out twin figures with 11 and 10 markers.

    SHS-AdC (96) - Ochea 29, Galvez 16, Jaboneta 12, Igna 8, Araw-Araw 7, Laguyo 7, Cercado 6, Padilla 4, Competente 4, Senining 3
    UV (82) - Desiderio 34, Limitares 11, Dinolan 10, Manzo 6, Fernandez 3, Dela Cerna 3, Samal 3, Marquez 2, Escalona 2, Canete 2, Cabanilla 2, Berdero 1, Santillan 1
