Nah! It's more fascinating watching the stars afar than up close.

Actually, don't expect too much. Layo kaayo ang stars, even the BEST telescopes out there for casual and even amateur astronomyu can only see them as nothing more than points of light, with an occassional change in color and or brightness (variable stars). Mao nga daghang ordinaryong tawo dali ra kaayo ma-discouraged sa astronomy--why?--simple, they will ask "Patanawa ko sa stars bi" if you have a telescope... they look and they react "Ngek, parehas ra man diay...wa'y lingaw man diay ning astronomy." Shakes head...goes to show how impatient and narrow minded most people are. Which is why proper guidance is truly needed.

What most people don't know is that MORE amazing stuff is out there in the night sky that YOU CANNOT SEE with only your naked eyes, stuff like globular clusters, supernova remnants, nebulae...and galaxies...hundreds and thousands and millions of galaxies...for me, the first time I ever saw a real faraway galaxy through a telescope (the Andromeda galaxy can actually be seen with the naked eye, you don't need a telescope), which was the Sombrero galaxy, using a telescope I helped make with my own hands, was really something that got imprinted in my mind so vividly, it is a frequent recurring dream at times...why?...

...I was looking at something which was 29,300,000 million light years away...which meant I am looking now at Sombrero the way it was 29 million years ago...

    ...that alone is mind boggling.

    I agree with Rodsky.

One may also try a pair of binoculars on the evening sky. What looks like an area with few stars, becomes populated with more stars through the lenses.

These seemingly new stars have had been there all along (I was told). Their brightness is just too weak for unaided human eyes to see. The key is either to increase the brightness of a star (or group of stars), which can't be done, or to increase the amount of light one is able to capture, in order to see more of a star (or group of stars), making it (these) bright enough to see.

If we can only increase the surface area of our eyes, these will be able to capture more light, and eventually see what normal sized eyes can’t see. It is also useful for scaring people. Nighttime is incidentally an added convenience.

This is what a primary lens makes possible. It acts like a larger "eye" with the ability to capture more light by virtue of simply being larger than a human eye. It is not scary at all. What it can also do is make faces look funny.

In order to view what a primary lens captures, additional lenses, and perhaps a mirror, are needed to adjust and focus the image into what human eyes can look into. It also makes your telescope more impressive and makes people think you really know what you’re doing.

It is not magnification that makes stars brighter or unseen stars visible. What it does is to make a dim star into a bigger dim star, and an unseen star into a larger area of blackness. Magnification presents a larger image or zooms into an image in similar brightness.

whoah! some of the words are jargon. good thing i work with cameras, at least i understand a bit about lenses and capturing light.

My questions are. does it make you feel any different? Watching stars with the naked eye and with a telescope. Do we feel closer when we use a telescope?
