I agree on Simon Birch.
The other recent film that moved me was Antoine Fuqua's Tears of the Sun. When I was this high --- or when when I was in my kneepants --- I could easily remember All Mine To Give, Federico Fellini's Andremo en Citta, and another Federico Fellini (starring John Voigt, Faye Dunnawaye and child actor Rick Schroeder) The Champ.
How about Elia Kazan' On the Waterfront, yet another Elia Kazan Splendor on the Grass, Richard Lester's Midnight Cowboy (Dustin Hoffman and John Voight), Charlie Chaplin's City Lights and Viktor Fleming's Gone With The Wind (also directed by George Cukor but credited only to Fleming).
