Well the societal norms you are referring to are also dictated by that same primitive and biological reason--the rest of the cavemen tribe would also wonder how a weak, short, guy managed to get the best looking, tallest girl in the tribe, they would naturally conclude that the shorter guy somehow either just got really lucky, or he used foul play to get the girl. It's always been like that.

And the only reason why you squirm at the Ogie-Michelle tandem is not because of Ogie's height, but because of how he looks like...I mean, when Tom and Nicole were still a pair, I didn't see anybody doing any squirming.
