Live-Action Rurouni Kenshin Film Licensed in 60+ Countries

17 more are in talks; cast & director celebrate 1 million tickets sold in Japan
Keishi Ōtomo's live-action film adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga has been licensed for overseas distribution in over 60 countries. The countries span Europe, Latin America, and Asia and include Germany, Mexico, and Taiwan. In addition, the rights for another 17 countries are under negotiations.
Back in Japan, the film has been seen over 1 million times as of Saturday, the eighth day of its theatrical run which started on August 25. In particular, it was seen 103,447 times on August 29 alone; that day was a weekday, but it was also a "Ladies Day," the traditional day for discounted prices for female moviegoers. As of Saturday, the film has earned 1,213,540,000 yen (about US$15.49 million).
The film's stars Takeru Satoh (Kamen Rider Den-O, Rookies, Beck) and Emi Takei (Kyō, Koi o Hajimemasu, For Love's Sake/Ai to Makoto), along with director Ōtomo, appeared at a surprise onstage greeting at Tokyo's Shinjuku Piccadilly theater on Sunday to reveal the news. The post-screening event capped off a whirlwind two-day tour of eight cities — Sapporo, Sendai, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Tokyo.
Satoh not only expressed his joy at seeing the fan support during this cross-country tour, but also at the announcement of the wide international release plans. "It's a dream come true." Takei added that this is the first time she has taken part in such a cross-country theater tour for a hit film, and that she is delighted so many people from grandfathers to children are seeing the film.
Ōtomo noted that he studied abroad, so the news of the widespread overseas plans had special meaning for him personally. The film's teaser trailer and full trailer (shown below) have already been translated into English, Spanish, French, and Chinese.

one of the reviewers who already watched the movie in japan with subs:
"Even if you have high expectations (if you followed the manga/anime) I think you won't be disappointed at all. The story ends with Kenshin's battle with Jin'e. Aoshi's character was left out of the plot, but the other Oniwabanshin characters were there.
The movie was well-cast. I loved the portrayals of Sanosuke (spot on!) Saito, Jin-e, & Kaoru.
The lead actor absolutely nailed all the nuances of Kenshin's character from innocent buffoon to killer Battousai mode. He trained intensely in swordplay and is a B-boy so he was able to pull off all the athletic moves in the movie. As the other poster said, the battle scenes were stunning, best sword play scenes from any samurai movie ever and they didn't even show the best moves in the trailers so you have tons to look forward to in the actual movie.
Second, the movie tried to be faithful to the era so the set design, costumes were more realistic. It was a good blending of anime elements and real-life.
Of course they had to change the story line here and there to make everything fit into 2hrs&19 mins of film but the spirit of the original story line was maintained, I believe.
And whatever complaints you may have, seeing Hiten Mitsurugi battoujutsu live will definitely give you goosebumps and make it all worth it "
another viewers quote:
"THE MOVIE WAS SOOOO GOOD!!! better than i expected! for sure it would win awards for its artistry in its plot and also the VERY VERY VERY NICE SWORDFIGHTS!!.. the rurouni kenshin movie was translated into a realistic way of swordfight, yet you would notice how spectacular the fight scenes appear and also they translated Hiten Mitsurugi Style in a breath taking manner...
The actors were also very good.. Kudos to Takeru Sato who played Kenshin Himura, he played his role perfectly.. Also to Emi Takei who played Kaoru, she was very beautiful.. Their tandem made the movie very much worth it.
The Plot covers the first arc of the Anime, i would not spoil everyone about it so maybe research it yourself...
The movie itself had English Subtitles so its very nice for me as a foreigner to watch the movie here in Tokyo..
overall... This gives hope that good cinematography can turn anime into a very wonderful, beautiful and entertaining Live Action movie... I would not be surprised if this movie would win any major awards internationally. Very much comparable from award winning Japanese themed movies like Memoirs of a Geisha or Letters from Iwo Jima.. I know that this movie would be released internationally, I just dont know about the dates of its international release. If it does, then I would watch it 10 times more!
btw.. Rurouni Kenshin is far better than the Avengers.."
